New Year's Day Hangover Hike

Happy New Year's Eve, everyone! Hope you are enjoying the end of the holidays with family and friends. In celebration of the first day of 2013, we will be having a New Years Day hike to Surprise Lake tomorrow, January 1st. Meet us at Town Cycle at 11 a.m. With the limited parking over by White Road/Warwick Tpke., we'll consolidate cars at the shop and head over. Please dress warmly, and bring food and water for yourself. This is a moderately strenuous hike with lots of varied terrain and great views at the top to reward you for all of your climbing! If you prefer to hike with poles or hiking stick, this is the place for them. The forecast is for a few flurries, but that shouldn't slow us down!

As always, email us at info@teamtowncycle.com with any questions. May 2013 be a great year for you and yours!

Sunday's NYC Reindeer ride canceled but rescheduled!

Due to the poor weather outlook for Sunday, December 16, we are regrettably canceling the NYC Reindeer Ride and rescheduling for Sunday, December 23rd. We'll meet at KC's Bagels on Route 23 at 10 a.m., and hopefully this time, the weather will cooperate! If you plan on coming, let us know - info@teamtowncycle.com .

One last lap around the pump track for 2012!

Well, the sad time has come - time to close down the West Milford Family Pump Track for the season. If we continue to ride on it during the rain/freeze/thaw/snow cycles that mark our winters in northern NJ, we'll do lots of damage to the track - and too many people worked too hard to let that happen. So - Saturday, December 15 is the day. We'll have one last "hurrah" around the track, and will close it up for the season by 2:30 p.m. If you need one last day of riding to carry you through the winter - we'll see you Saturday!

And to everyone who helped us at all this year - volunteering, shoveling, planting, buying raffle tickets, t-shirts, stickers, etc. - thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for helping to bring this wonderful project to life. We're already making plans for next year, and we can't wait until spring to start working - and riding - our pump track again!

Reindeer ride, tubeless demo and more!

Although the weather doesn't look great for this weekend, just a reminder that it is shotgun season in NJ through tomorrow, December 8. Please be careful if you are going to be out in the woods! Also, firearm season continues in NYS thru the 16th, where no mountain biking is allowed during shotgun season in state parks.

Also, if you are curious about how to set up your wheels tubeless, come by Town Cycle tomorrow at 5 p.m. for a demonstration! Team Town Cycle and CCI/Town Cycle race team members will be there to demonstrate the Stan's No Tubes system, how easy it is to do, and what you'll need to do it. Come by and check it out - and RSVP if you can!

Also, for those of you planning ahead - next weekend is our annual Reindeer Ride in NYC - Sunday, Dec. 16th! We've changed our starting time to 11 a.m., at KC's Bagels on Route 23 South in Pompton Plains, so mark your calendars accordingly! Need antlers? RSVP ASAP and we'll see about getting you some!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Small Business Saturday

Hoping everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, however you celebrated! Now that everyone is moving on to the upcoming holidays, and being bombarded by all kinds of commercials for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc. - please don't forget your local small businesses. Small Business Saturday, the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, is a reminder to shop local, and support those who make our towns and neighborhoods work. Our lives would be much less rich without our local shops and business owners - let's show them how much we appreciate them by spending some of our own hard earned holiday dollars right in our own shopping districts!

Thanksgiving plans and more!

  • Yep - it's on! Our annual Thanksgiving day mountain bike ride at Waywayanda! The park will be open, and there are enough trails open to make a nice loop or two. Let's meet at the boat launch parking lot between 8 and 8:30 - we'll form groups and try to be rolling shortly after 8:30 a.m. Lots of people have different time tables for the day - there's bound to be a group with the same time constraints as you! Weather is supposed to be excellent - no excuses!
  • Too busy stuffing the turkey to make it on Thursday? No problem - plug in those lights and come with us on Friday night, November 23. Norm and Sherri will host a night mountain bike ride from their place - 49 A Meridan Road, Rockaway. Meet up at 6 p.m. - the plan is hawk watch and back  via quiet paved and dirt roads, not technical, but some good climbing. Afterwards, stay for pizza, goodies, etc. - and please bring something, if you are so inspired - salad, etc. RSVP to Sherri at salbrecht1@verizon.net or text her at 973-727-2660.
  • Save this date for one of our famous NYC Reindeer rides! Sunday, December 16, meeting at KC's Bagels on Route 23 in Pompton Plains at 8:30 a.m. If you haven't been on one of our reindeer rides before, and need antlers, please RSVP to Heather by 12/10 to get your very own antlers!
As always, we are so very thankful for you, our cycling family - hoping you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Bubble Cross 2012 is in the books!

Well, chalk one up for Mother Nature - she may have messed with our original race date, and many of our lives these last 2 weeks, but she gave us a beauty of a day for the re-scheduled Bubble Cross at Bubbling Springs. After some early morning fog, we spent the rest of the day enjoy sun, brilliant blue skies, and some awesome racing!

A great big "Thanks!" to everyone who came out and raced - or even just heckled! Kenny Lundgren, we're looking at you! (Aside - Kenny should be a professional heckler - agreed?). David Kahl and Larry Towner set up an awesome course - challenging and fun - the classic cyclcocross combination!

Photo credits to J. Justin Fatuzzo and BJ Kisch

Also a great big thanks to everyone who helped us juggle the rescheduling - USA Cycling, the NJBA, the Township of West Milford, the West Milford First Aid Squad, Ruby Rose and all their awesome food, and Uncorked Wines for the beer. Also thanks to John Florey and Highland Sports Group for the 2 pairs of Shimano shoes for the womens race winners, along with for a bunch of prizes for our juniors, as well as Michael Hoek and the staff at Town Cycle, as always. Race sponsors ACD Security, Trius Pest, and Pro Power Endurance Coaching are ardent supporters of the club and our annual cyclocross race.

Results are posted here. We are already scheming for next year - thanks for your support in making this year a great success!

Bubble Cross is rescheduled for November 11!

OK folks, sorry it took so long to get all the updates out, but most of us are working with no or little internet access, no power, and spotty cell phone service.

We're a go for November 11, 2012 - all other details remain the same. BikeReg has been updated, and the updated flyer is here . If you pre-registered through BikeReg, and can't make the event, we will absolutely refund your entry fee. We will be sending out an email through BikeReg tomorrow with procedure for refunds, and appreciate your patience as we work through them.

Don't forget - our local adult developmentally disabled group P.R.I.D.E. will be selling bagels and coffee in the morning, local Mexican restaurant Ruby Rose will be selling mini burritos for lunch, and your race number gets you a free beer at Uncorked Wines in West Milford after the race!

Thanks for your understanding and patience on this. Yes, we could have pulled it off, but hopefully this will give everyone a chance to really recover and enjoy the race. Our thoughts are with those from down the NJ shore, Staten Island, NYC, and Long Island who really bore the brunt of the storm. Hope your road to recovery is a swift one!

Bubble Cross postponed!

Hi folks-

Although the venue looks great, we've decided between gas problems, so many still without power, and many dealing with much, much worse, that it would be best to postpone this weekend's race. We should be able to announce plans for rescheduling very shortly - please have some patience while we hammer out the details.

For those of you who pre-registered, we also ask for your patience, as we work out the details. We will handle questions about re-scheduling and refunds very shortly. Rest assured, every one who wants a refund will be able to get one.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience, ask for your patience, and hope you and yours are safe and sound.

Bubble Cross is on!

We hope that you and yours have survived Hurricane Sandy, and are getting back to normal. Normal for us means racing! The venue survived the storm well, and with the less than predicted amount of rain, we are in good shape. So come on out on Sunday and join us! Don't forget, a free beer is waiting for all racers who show their number at Uncorked Wines in West Milford.

Pre-reg closes at 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. Also, we know it"s been a tough week, but we are still hoping to collect non-perishable food items for our local food pantry. With the storm and the aftermath, they are in even greater need. Please help if you can!

As always, any questions, email us at info@teamtowncycle.com.

Don't Forget - Bubble Cross CX is Nov. 4th!

We are excited about the new venue for 2012! Bubbling Springs Park, West Milford, NJ. It promises to be a fun course - technical, with some climbing, some sand, and of course - bubbles! Here are some other new additions for 2012!

  • Race at Bubble Cross 2012, and your number gets you a free beer at Uncorked Wines in West Milford! Great way to unwind after the race and compare notes with friends!
  • Kids Race at noon! Any age under 10 - training wheels ok! Swag and snacks for all!
  • Great food! West Milford's own P.R.I.D.E., a group of developmentally disabled adults, will be selling coffee and bagels in the morning, and there will be burritos from Ruby Rose starting at 11 a.m.
  • Please help us with our annual food drive - we are hoping to help fill the shelves of our local food pantry!
  • Our race schedule has been tweaked slightly to accommodate the kids race. Please double check your starting time. Also, don't forget the time changes on Saturday night, and the clocks go back one hour!
  • Parking is onsite, but we appreciate any carpooling you can do. No alcohol or pets, please.
  • Don't forget - entry fees go up $10 if you register onsite!

As always, any questions - info@teamtowncycle.com. Looking forward to a great  race!

Pump Track closed to prepare for Hurricane Sandy

Additional hurricane closures - the West Milford Family Pump Track is closed until further notice. We're taking today to cover up as many of the jumps as we can and dig some additional drainage. Thanks for your understanding - we'll let you know when it re-opens!

NJ State Park Closures

Hey everyone -

As a heads up, we have just heard that all NJ State Parks will be closed as of noon tomorrow, Sunday, October 28th. This will give the park staff time to clear roads, etc. before the storm. We'll let you know when they are officially re-opened.

Be safe!

Last minute ride - Sterling Forest, 10/27

Sorry for the late notice - we're going to do a last minute "before the storm" road ride tomorrow in Sterling Forest! We'll meet at the visitors center at 10:30 a.m. - plan on a three hour ride. The newly paved roads in the park are a joy to ride on, and the leaves will certainly be blown off the trees by the hurricane, so come on out and get a good look at them before they are gone!

Giving Mike a hand!

Hello friends -

As many of you know, our friend and local bike shop owner Michael Hoek had a recent serious crash on his bike, one which has involved both surgery and now rehab. And, as we all know, neither of those things comes cheap! Many of you have known Mike for years, and know how supportive he has been of cycling - for the racer, the casual rider, and everyone in between. So, in support of Mike, and Town Cycle, and all small businesses and their owners, we'd like to show him some love - and we'd truly appreciate it if you could help us out.

The Cash Mob has been a great tool that the Sustainable West Milford has used to highlight local businesses. They pick a date, ask everyone to bring some cash, and "mob" the chosen store. We know the bike shop doesn't really fit into the type of business that normally the West Milford Cash Mob would frequent - that's why we're appealing to the wider cycling community. If you're headed out to ride before the storm this weekend, or are taking a ride next week or weekend, come hit up Town Cycle for some Clif bars, extra tubes, CO 2 cartridges, etc. New socks, some gloves - items you need to stock up on anyway! Any purchase, large or small, would be a big help to Mike, his shop and his family, and would be a great way to show Mike how much we care for him, and all he has done for the last 25+ years for the local cycling community.

Please pass the word on to your friends and family in the cycling community. Start your Christmas shopping early - or hand someone your Christmas wish list! And thank you all for your support. We know that the cycling community is well known for "taking care of their own" - and we appreciate it!

Update on our favorite bike shop owner!

Just to keep you up to date on the latest - Mike is out of the hospital, and will be spending the next few days at rehab, getting used to walking with the new hardware he is sporting! He wants to thank everyone for the all the good wishes, and asks you give him a little more time before visiting, so he can concentrate on his physical therapy and getting home! Once he's home, he'll be more than happy to see people.

In the meantime, the shop is open for business, with the same usual hours, staffed by all of Mike's most trusted people. A lot of people have asked what they can do to help, which is so much appreciated. The best thing you can do for Mike right now? Go shopping at Town Cycle! Start your holiday shopping early, or start loading up on your cold weather riding gear. Or even get a head start on outfitting your ride for next season! Maybe you've been over to the new West Milford Family Pump Track, and thought - "hey, I need a new bike for this place!" Whatever it is you've been waiting for, now's the time. Let's support Mike the way we know best - by riding our bikes!

Catching up - Kids Ride, Jungle Habitat 10/13/12

It's been busy around here, so let's go back a week and catch up! On Saturday, October 13, we helped JORBA host a kids mountain bike ride at Jungle Habitat. We had age ranges from 2-16, training wheels to tubeless - all having a great time!

Much thanks to John Florey and the Highlands Sports Group for donating swag, as well as Jeff Lenosky for donating some great hats, Native and Teva stickers and Clif bars. Also a big thank you to Ski Ducks for helping to underwrite our day, and as always, Town Cycle!

Just a few more pictures available here . Thanks again to all the riders and the volunteers who came out in the cold - we had a chilly start, but a great ride! Can't wait to do it again!

Get well Mike!

Our favorite local bike shop owner, Mike Hoek, took a tough tumble off his bike, and learned that gravity is a harsh mistress! The bad news is that it took surgery to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. The good news is that the doctors say the surgery was a total success, and he should be home in a few days. Mike asked for no visitors until he is home, but we're sure he'd appreciate hearing from you -info@towncycle.com . We'll keep you updated - happy healing, Mike!

Weekend reminders - August 17-19

Just a quick reminder - because of the air show at Greenwood Lake Airport (which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday), Jungle Habitat will be teeming with people on the ground and planes overhead! If you're looking for a quiet ride, try some of our other local state parks!

Also because of the air show, Farrell Field will be closed, so there will be no work sessions on the pump track this weekend. Thanks again to everyone who has come out!

Want to take the kids riding? Consider taking them to the 3rd annual Hilltop Grasshopper Kids MTB race in North Caldwell - they run a great event for kids entering K-8! More info - http://www.jorba.org/node/645

And as always, Friday night ride on Clinton Road - our season is winding down, so don't miss it!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Pump track work, kids racing and more!

  • Work is in full swing at the West Milford Pump Track - don't you want to be able to say you were there when it was built? Join us tonight (Monday) and Tuesday night to lend a hand as we continue to move and sculpt! It's dirty work, so bring gloves and your least favorite socks and work appropriate shoes! We'll be there at 6 p.m. both days, weather permitting.
  • Don't forget, this Saturday is the 3rd annual Hilltop Grasshopper kids MTB race in North Caldwell. Our JORBA and Hilltop Conservancy friends put on a wonderful event - perfect for getting kids involved in racing. All kids ages K-8 are welcome! Swag for everyone who participates! • Reminder that this coming weekend, August 17-19, the Greenwood Lake Airshow is taking place. Jungle Habitat will be open for riding, but it will be crawling with people, and lots of planes flying overhead. If you are looking for a quiet nature moment, you may want to think about riding elsewhere this weekend. On the upside, the air show is supposed to be fantastic, so check it out if you are so inclined!
  • Lastly, our NYC ride for Sunday, Aug. 19 is being postponed. We'll let you know as soon as we can reschedule.
Of course, weather permitting, our usual Wed. and Fri. Clinton Road rides are on - the days are getting shorter, so don't miss out on this last month or so of rides!

As always, any questions, drop us a line at info@teamtowncycle.com, and have a great week!

Mountain Creek ride canceled for August 11

Due to impending rain/conditions, we're canceling Mountain Creek ride for today. Come on over to Jungle Habitat for the JORBA ride instead!

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Weekend mountain biking fun!

Lots of mountain biking fun for the weekend! Check us out!
  • Saturday, August 11 - JORBA ride at Jungle Habitat - part of the ever popular JORBA ride series! Two groups - one for those who would like the complete tour, one for those who want to go fast! Meet at the gate, wheels down at 10 a.m. Great chance to meet the good people who do the hard work at other parks in the state! More info here!
  • Also on Saturday, TTC's BJ will lead a ride at Mountain Creek. Meet at 9 a.m. at the biker parking lot across from the mountain, we'll be on the lift by 9:30 a.m. $7 buys you a one time ride up the mountain, where we'll hit the cross country trails. The XC trails are pretty tame, any level should be able to handle it! At the end, we'll sneak in a downhill run or two, or if you prefer, hitch a ride on the gondola.
  • Sunday, August 12 - TTC's James will lead a ride up at Stewart State Forest, meeting at 12 noon. It will be about a 20 mile loop in a beginner/intermediate level. Weather permitting. Stewart is a great place for riders of all levels, a good place to check out! Use the Weed Road Entrance just off Rt. 207.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate across the board! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Saturday, June 16 Sugarloaf ride!

Looking for a good weekend road ride? We've got one for you!  Steve and Martha Boshart will be leading a moderate paced 50 mile, no drop, regroup after hills road ride, leaving from Town Cycle at 9 AM. It will go out to Sugarloaf, NY, where we will grab a breakfast burrito at the old Train Station deli. We'll head back using Warwick back roads. We'll make a stop in Warwick before climbing back over the mountain back into West Milford. Expect about 48-50 miles with some moderate climbing, and 4 hours of riding with the breakfast stop. If someone wants to avoid the last climb home, they can leave a car in Warwick if so desired. There will definitely be more climbing one way than the other, but we'll consult with the group and decide if the climbing happens before brunch or after. Bring plenty of water and some cash as well - the weather promises to be gorgeous!

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Wednesday Night rides are ON! Plus other news ...

First, the weather in West Milford is beautiful - no rain since dawn this morning, so we're on for our 6 p.m. intermediate pace ride at Jungle tonight! Ladies are good to go too!

Secondly, we have a lot of "Save the Date" announcements coming up, but the one everyone has been asking for is our annual road ride to New Paltz. We've got our date - July 8th! Details about exact times, etc. will be forthcoming, but mark that one on your calendar - July 8 to New Paltz.

Of course, there is no better way to start off the weekend than Friday night road riding on Clinton Road. We've pushed back our start time to 6 p.m. so more people can make it. Come on out, unwind from your busy week, and get a good workout to boot!

We're busy plotting other rides and dates, so look for more soon ....

Rumble Course Maps and GPS files

OK, it's that time of year - everyone wants to know what the Rumble in the Jungle course is going to be! A few notes -

  • Course changes may be made up until race day depending on trail conditions, weather, and mood of course designer.
  • Course will run the same direction as the last few years - counterclockwise, starting at the top of parking lot. Finish will be same as last 2 years, coming into parking lot out of tunnels.
  • By this Friday night (May 11), we will try to have a few arrows up around to point out connectors that you may not be familiar with, etc. Course will be fully marked before sundown on Friday, May 18.
  • Cat 1 - will be doing 3 laps. Cat. 2 will do 2 laps, Cat. 3 rides 1 lap. The course is very slightly different for Cat 2 & 3 - make sure you pick the correct map/GPS file for your class.
So here we go -
  • Crayon map for Cat. 1 is here, outlined in purple/pink. Yes, it's not perfect. We know.
  • Crayon map for Cat. 2/3 is here, shown in light blue. See above.

Although regular registration has closed for the 2012 version, which takes place on May 6, you can still ride by joining their Ride for a Reason program. Several charitable organizations have been give spots in the race, which can be yours - if you raise money for their charity. TTC member Lisa has worked with the Family Reach Foundation, which has some spots available. For more info, including fundraising requirements, check out their website
  • TTC member Sherri pointed us to the Pedal for Preservation Ride run by The Land Conservancy of New Jersey. Help them preserve open space in New Jersey while enjoying a family friendly ride on the Columbia Trail, leaving from Chester, NJ. The ride is slated for Sunday, June 3, but discounted registration ends April 30, so check out their website for all the details!
  • Quite a few TTC members are talking about the Wilmington Whiteface Bike Fest, taking place June 14-17. From the Jump Jams and Trials Exhibition, to the costume parade and BikeFest Beach party, to the gravity events (everything from dual slalom to an uphill bike race)and the Wilmington/Whiteface 100K Mountain Bike race (a qualifier for the Leadville 100), it sounds like a blast. More info here .
  • Friend of TTC Kathi Krause is organizing a ladies downhill clinic on April 28 at Plattekill, NY, for beginner to advanced downhill riders. More info can be found on her Facebook page . She's also working on a date closer to home, May 12-13 at Mountain Creek - we'll work on getting you some details on that soon.
  • We've told you about this one in the past, but don't forget the Gran Fondo of NJ, being held on September 9, 2012. TTC's Angela has gotten us a team discount code of  TTCGFNJ2012 - make sure you pick Team Town Cycle as your team! Register at www.active.com.

Weekend rides

A little something to think of as you slog through the week ...

  • Friday Night road rides on Clinton Road are back! We're slowing getting back into our routine. Newbie or experienced riders - come join us, learn the basic etiquette of group road rides, or get a good brisk ride in as you shake off the stress of another work week! We'll meet at the old Village Square Inn Parking lot, 2887 Route 23, Newfoundland, NJ - let's try to be ready to ride at 5:30. We'll break into groups and do our usual out and back on Clinton Road.
  • Saturday, April 21 - join us at Allaire State Park for a mountain bike ride. If you've never been to Allaire, you're missing out on a great park. It's an excellent place for newer riders, and lots of flowing singletrack for experienced riders! The terrain is completely different than in our neck of the woods, so treat yourself and take a trip there! Map to the parking lot is here - plan on 90 minutes travel time from the West Milford area. We'll meet you at 10 a.m. in the Hospital Road parking lot - bring plenty of water and snacks. More info on the park can be found here. Rain will cancel our ride.
  • Sunday, April 22 - the first Campmor H2H race of 2012 is at Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill. If you like Jungle Habitat, you'll love Blue Mountain. Come on out and give it a try - details at www.wmba.org. And good luck to all our TTC racers!
More info on more events coming up - stay tuned!

Meet at the Shop Rite parking lot at 9 a.m., and plan on approx. 106 miles round trip! They'll stop in New Paltz, re-fuel (have lunch!), and head back south. Weekend rides, and good luck to our road racers!

First - members of the Team Town Cycle road racing contingent are off to the Tour of the Battenkill this weekend. It's a classic spring race, and a tough one. TTC has been training hard for this one though, and they are up for the challenge - good luck to them all!

Second - don't forget, Friday night rides are on! Meet at the Old Village Square Inn parking lot on Route 23 Newfoundland - wheels down at 5:30 p.m.

Third - the Campmor H2H series starts next weekend at Blue Mountain in Peekskill. For those interested in pre-riding the course this weekend, we'll meet at the parking lot at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 15. Hopefully, the course map will be released by then, and we'll do a few easy laps of the course to get acquainted with the route!

As always, email us with any questions, and have a great weekend!
