Rides, more rides, and then some more rides!

  • Thursday night TTC's Dillon VW is leading a XC ride at Mountain Creek - and it includes a free XC lift ticket! Hit the bike shop for your lift ticket before you meet him at the lift at 5:30 p.m. He'll give you a good tour of the XC trails at Mountain Creek!
  • Saturday, July 26, TTC's Cliff and Diana will be going on an epic road ride in the Catskills. The route is 82 miles of paved and decent dirt roads. Elevation gain is 7,600 feet of climbing, with the worst grades at 14 to 16%. Road bikes with 25mm or larger tires will do fine, and you can make do with a rear cog of 26 teeth, but 28 teeth is definitely better. A cyclocross bike would be ideal! Bringing a spare tube is a good idea. The basic Strava route is here- http://www.strava.com/routes/589645. With all those hills and distance the ride won't be hard, just steady, with an average speed around 11-12 mph. They plan a deli stop or two along the way, and probably be rolling from Boiceville around 9:30 a.m. If you're interested, e-mail -diana.rooney@gmail.com, or give her a call/text at two zero one -566-five five two five.
  • Also on Saturday, a special trail maintenance project is going on at Jungle Habitat. Meet at the gate at 9 a.m., bring water and gloves - we'll bring the rest. We'll work until noon. Paydirt eligible for all you H2H racers out there!
  • Sunday, July 27 is Race #3 in the NYS MTB series at Stewart, the SOS MTB Challenge. If you like Stewart, you'll love this race!
  • Do you like good riding and good food? Would you like an event that combines both? Then you should definitely check out the Tour de Farm NJ! It's a cycling and tasting tour of NJ farms - gourmet farmer's breakfast, tastings at each farm, and healthy post-ride hors d'oeuvres. A few TTC members have already signed up, so join them and make it a party!
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Racing recaps - distance and downhill!

We've been remiss in recapping the results of our TTC race team and club members for the last month or so, so here we go! Let's cover some endurance events and downhill racing first.

  • First up is the Wildcat Epic Events Wildcat 100 on Jun 28 - this is a great distance event just outside of New Paltz, NY, with a 50K, 100K, and 100 mile option. Lots of fun camping out, a great family run event. TTC's Norm Albrecht finished an outstanding 14th overall (11th in the Open Men Category) in the 100K race, and reported that the event is well worth the trip - check it out next year!
  • Speaking of distance events, the always popular BearScat 50 took place on June 1, and as usual, TTC had a great showing. All the TTC riders finished both laps - woohoo! Norm Albrecht and Rich Vandenbos had strong showings in the Mens 45+ class, and Joe Neubig rode a strong singlespeed race, as did David Van Wart, who finished 3rd in that class. Brad Tasik, in his first BS50 at age 16, finished an awesome 20th, and Dillon Van Wart moved up a place from last year, finishing 9th in Open Men. They were joined by John Marshall, who also finished in the top half of the Open Men class. If you've ever thought of trying a distance event, this is a great one to start out with!
  • Downhill racing - our small but mighty downhill team has been rippin' it all season long! Back in May, Titus Nicholson got 1st place (U14 Men) and Quinton Johnson got 9th in 15-18 Men at the Eastern States Cup race at Mountain Creek. Quinton also finished 7th at the ESC race at Plattekill. At the Gravity East series races at Mountain Creek in June - Quinton got a 1st (U14) and Quinton a 7th in 15-18 Men. In Speculator, NY, Titus once again won the U14 class, and Quinton place 5th in the 15-18 Men's class. If you want to learn more about downhill racing, Mountain Creek has a fun Thursday night series - check it out! And you never know when people like World Cup racer Neko Mulally might show up .... just like he did a few weeks ago!
Up next - XC, state champions and BMX!

Parking location change for Clinton Road rides effectively immediately!

For many years, we've been fortunate to park at the "satellite" lot at the intersection of Rt. 23 and Clinton Rd for our famous (or are they infamous?) TTC Clinton Rd. road rides. However, due to a change of ownership, that lot is no longer available to us.

Fortunately, we've been able to find something close by to serve our needs. The United Methodist Church, 65 La Rue Rd, Newfoundland, NJ 07435 has very generously offered to allow us to park in their lot for both our Wednesday night Ladies Only rides as well as our Friday night rides. There may be other people using the lot at the times we will be there, so they have asked that we park to the left of the driveway or in the area facing the road to the right of the driveway in order to minimize any inconveniences to their members.

We at TTC are extremely grateful to the UMC of Newfoundland for their hospitality, and hope you'll all join us in thanking them! Also a big thanks to TTC's Steve Boshart for helping to get the wheels rolling with his connections - Steve's the man!

Hike in Beacon, NY on June 7

TTC member Tom B. will be leading a hike out of Beacon NY on Saturday, June 7. The weather looks perfect! Here's his itinerary -
    • A 2 to 3 hour hike at Breakneck Ridge (first hour or so a steep uphill climb with lots of rock scrambling and incredible views of the Hudson Valley, the rest downhill on normal trails). For info about parking, trails, etc., take a look at this link. Tom will not be doing the full loop outlined on that link - he will head up the White Trail, but down a different route - about 5-6 miles in total.
    • Lunch somewhere in Beacon
    • Dessert at Zora Dora's - amazing creamsicles and popsicles (maybe 40 flavors!).
Two meeting places possible - 8:30 a.m. at the Home Depot in Riverdale (meet at the end of the lot closest to Staples) - Tom will leave promptly at 8:30, so don't be late! For those who want to meet in Beacon, meet at the trailhead parking lot at 9:45 a.m. Hike will step off at 10 a.m.

For what it is worth, there is an MTA stop just north of the parking lot.  It seems to be there strictly for hikers, as it does not appear to have its own parking lot.
Tom's email is tom@bowmaster.us, and his cell is 201-787-7365. If you are planning on meeting Tom at Home Depot, please email him and let him know. You can RSVP to Tom or us to let us know if you are coming - this way Tom will know to wait for you. Sounds like an awesome day of hiking (and popsicles!) - we can't wait!

Any questions - feel free to get in touch with Tom or us.

Let's take a hike - and a few other reminders!!

OK, a few quick reminders and a few dates for your calendars!

  • Start times for both Wednesday night Ladies Rides on Clinton Road and Friday night Clinton Road rides are at 6 p.m. General weather policy is that rain will cancel Wednesday nights. Friday nights - well, if it rains, you may encounter a few hardy souls, but you may not.....
  • They're back, and better than ever! I Dig Tuesdays will start up again on May 27! Meet at the gate at JH at 5:45 p.m. Bring your own gloves, bug spray and water - we'll provide the tools. These nights are once again part of the JORBA PayDirt program, so all you H2H racers who need your hours - here's your chance! Very important note - if you don't sign in, you won't get the credit!!!!!!!
  • Speaking of PayDirt and Jungle Habitat, we'll also be working on Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m. Same rules apply as above!
  • Save the date for a TTC hike and lunch day! TTC member Tom B. will be leading a hike out of Beacon NY on June 7. Here's his itinerary -

    • Lunch somewhere in Beacon
    • Dessert at Zora Dora's - amazing creamsicles and popsicles (maybe 40 flavors!).
    • Approx. starting time in Beacon will be around 9:30-10 a.m., but we'll solidify times and meeting places in the next few days. In the meantime, mark the date on your calendar!

One last Rumble thank you ....

One last Rumble related note - a big thank you to all of the racers and spectators for leaving JH, both trails and parking lot, EXTREMELY clean this year! Without a doubt, this was the cleanest the park has ever been post-race! Thank you for respecting the park, our relationship with the NJ State Park system, and the time of our volunteers - we say it all the time, but the H2H family is the best!

Rumble in the Jungle 2014 edition - course maps, pre-rides, etc.!

So here we go! We've changed things up a bit for 2014. To start, we're moving the whole show - registration, start area, and finish line - into the upper parking lot. You'll be able to park up there as well - certainly plenty of room to spread out!

Now, to our stellar crayon maps. The course will run clockwise, and the approximate start/finish lines are indicated on the map. A note about the course - the weather is predicted to dump rain on us Friday. Please note that yes, this is the intended route, but conditions may dictate some slight deviations from this map come race day, and we hope you'll understand if we need to make some changes. We're working on a GPS file - maybe tomorrow?

Cat. 1 will run 3 laps. Cat. 2 will run 2 laps. Cat. 2 riders - please note the orange "Cat. 2" bypass note on the map - you will not ride that last bottom section known as Babs. It will be taped off for your race only. Cat. 3, you will race 2 laps of a shorter course - please see the separate map for Cat. 3.

Looking for a tour? We'll lead a ride of the Cat. 1/2 lap.on Thursday, May 15. We'll meet at the gate at 5:30 p.m., and do at least one, possibly 2 laps of the Cat. 1/2 course at a moderate pace. We'll ride in light rain, but heavy rain or thunder will cancel.

Cat. 3 lap pre-ride will be on Saturday morning, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. Again, we'll meet at the gate. We'll do 2 laps at a casual pace for all those beginners who want a chance to get familiar with the course!

There are some arrows already up at critical intersections. More will be going up as the week goes by. Weather depending, course should be marked up by Friday night - early Sat. a.m. at the latest. Course designer Dave VW will be out there every evening after work this week - feel free to hunt him down and ask him any course questions you have.

Get your Cat. 1/2 course map here. Cat. 3 course map is available here. See everyone out there on Sunday!

West Milford Family Pump Track CLOSED this weekend.

Due to the weather both current and forecasted, the West Milford Pump Track will be CLOSED this weekend. We'll have to wait until next Saturday, May 17, to try again for our 2014 grand opening.

Please stay off the track - the damage that gets done to the track when it is wet is a lot of work to reverse, and ruins the experience for everyone. Thanks so much for your understanding, and we'll try again next weekend!

Happy Mothers Day weekend!

Before we post a single thing, let's remember the most important event happening this weekend is Mother's Day! Don't forget to thank the moms in your life for all they do for you!
  • Friday Night Ride will go on for any hardy souls willing to brave the mist and the fog - although any thunderstorms will cancel. Start time is now officially 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 10 - want a sneak peek at the Rumble in the Jungle race course? Come on out and help us rake and cut back any face-slappers and you'll get a close up first hand look! Meet us at the gate at 12 p.m., and we'll work for about 2 hours or so. We'll work in light rain, but heavy rain will cancel. This is not a Paydirt event, just a chance to get an early look at the race course.
  • Weather permitting, Saturday will also be the grand opening of the West Milford Family Pumptrack for 2014! Some changes from 2013 await all you dirt riders. Any rain will cancel - rain date will be Sunday, May 11.
  • Sunday, May 11, TTC members Cliff and Diana will be headed to NYS for a long scenic road ride (though you may want your cross tires for some of those gravely roads!) They will leave from Margretville, NY at 10 a.m (about 2 hours away by car). They will be doing a shortened version of this route - planning on about 65 miles. Some good climbing, gravely roads, and great scenery! Contact Cliff directly for more info.
Have a great weekend everyone - especially all our favorite moms!

TTC downhill racers = awesome results!

Team Town Cycle is pumped to add two new downhill racers to our race team family this year - Quinton Johnson and Titus Nicholson. They attended the first big race of the year in PA this weekend, the Duryea Downhill - part of the Gravity East series. Quinton had a great race, finishing 7th in the Cat. 2 18 and under, and Titus finished an outstanding 2nd in the Open Mens 14 and under.

Wicked results guys - congrats!

Meet the 2014 Team Town Cycle Race team! Weekend after weekend, they are out there putting the TTC name out in the spotlight. Our race team may not be the largest, but they are well respected in the road, cyclocross, BMX, downhill and mountain biking worlds for both their competitiveness and for their sportsmanship. They are great ambassadors for our club, team and cycling, and we just wanted to take a moment to thank them for all their hard work and dedication!

A recent weekend had Ethan Huggins winning the Mens Middle School A class at our Juniors in the Jungle race, along with BJ Kisch and Tom Bowmaster tackling the competitive and challenging High Point Hill Climb TT, finishing a highly respectable 15th and 4th in their respective classes. Meanwhile, at the H2H Chainstretcher race at Blue Mountain, mountain bike racers Mike Moskowitz and Dave Schwartz battled a huge field in the Cat. 2 40-49 class,  while Nick Lando won the Pro/Open Men's Class, with Dillon Van Wart finishing 5th and David Kahl finishing 8th in the same class. David Van Wart also hit the podium at Blue, finishing 2nd in the Cat. 1 Singlespeed class. And this was just one weekend of racing!

Stay tuned for more news about our TTC racers as the season progresses!

Not looking good for the first FNR of 2014 ...

While it is fairly bright in WM right now, radar says rain will probably arrive just in time for our 2014 inaugural Friday Night Clinton Road ride. Our policy is generally "rain will cancel", but there are a few hardy souls that will probably show as long as there's no lightning. Expect turnout to be very low. If this is your first foray into a large group road ride, we suggest you wait until next week to "dip your toes" in the road riding pool.

Premiere of Friday Night Clinton Road rides for 2014 - we hope!

We are tentatively on for our first Friday Night Clinton Road road ride of 2014 tomorrow, April 11, but we will have to see what Mother Nature has in mind. Check back here for updates!

All levels and abilities welcome!

  • Friday, April 11 - it's back, and better than ever! The 2014 debut of Friday Night Clinton Road rides! We're still fighting for daylight this time of year, so our wheels down time is 5:30 p.m. We'll meet at the parking lot across from the soon-to-be opening Grasshoppers, 2891 Route 23, Newfoundland. For those of you unfamiliar with our Friday night rides, it's a great way to learn to ride with a group, learn about pacelines, and generally unwind from a long week and start the weekend out on a high note! All levels and abilities welcome - we'll split into groups, and make sure no one is left behind! Rain will cancel, so stay tuned to our blog, Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.

Weekend notes

Before you run off to enjoy your weekend - a few reminders!

  • TTC kit ordering closes on Monday! Do it before you leave work today! (just don't tell your boss!)
  • Road ride from the shop tomorrow, March 15 at 1:30 p.m. Details below!
  • A gentle reminder from our trail hugging volunteers to all of our long suffering mountain bikers - as anxious as everyone is to get out in the woods, please remember that all this thawing and melting makes the trails very susceptible to damage. Please don't make more work for all the already hard working volunteers and be patient a little longer! Thank you!
With that - have a great weekend!

We're headed south! Mountain biking at Allaire State Park. Sunday, March 2

Before our next round of snow in this soul sucking winter, we're headed south to Allaire State Park to ride our mountain bikes! If you've never been, it's a great place to ride for all levels - there's something there for everyone, and terrain unlike our usual northern rock gardens.

We'll meet at the parking lot on Hospital Road at 9:30, and ride for a few hours. It's approximate 1.5 hours from West Milford, so plan accordingly. Conditions will be cold, but trail reports say that there is almost no snow there, and with the ground mostly frozen, it should make for some good riding - a nice change from the road bike and the trainer!

As always, any questions - email us at info@teamtowncycle.com.

Women's Training Weeked at Cranks Bikepark in Syracuse April 5-6

Our friend Kathi Krause of Dirt Rock n Root Training is holding a Womens Training Weekend at Cranx Bike Park in Syracuse on April 5 and 6th - and it's sure to be a good one! More info at https://www.bikereg.com/Net/22763

Badminton is on for Saturday, February 22

No snow storm to interfere this weekend - come join us at NJ Badminton in Montville for a friendly game of badminton! No prior experience necessary - bring some sneakers (try to bring a pair that you haven't worn in the salt and grit in the street) and prepare for a good time!

Cross Country Skiing in New Paltz on Sunday, 2/23

The weather gods look like they are going to co-operate this weekend, so we're off to go cross country skiing at Lake Minnewaska in New Paltz this Sunday, February 23. You will need to provide your own equipment, including day packs with snacks/lunch.  We will meet at 9 a.m. at Oakland Bagel, 347 Ramapo Valley Rd., Oakland, NJ and organize from there.  Ski time will be about 4-5 hours. Weather looks to be partly sunny and close to 50 degrees - can't beat that for cross country skiing!

As always, any questions - info@teamtowncycle.com.

Edited to add: TTC's Diana let us know that Rock and Snow in New Paltz rents equipment - no need to invest big bucks. Thanks Diana!

Winter weekend fun

A little chilly for most cycling, but we've got lots of other fun in the pipeline!
  • Saturday badminton at NJ Badminton in Montville at 4 p.m. It's going to be cold, might as well go have fun inside!
  • Sunday, February 9, we will be going cross country skiing up at the High Point Cross Country Ski Center . Meet us at 10 a.m. and dress warmly - should be fun! Check their website for info about tickets, rentals, etc.
  • An annual TTC favorite in the past, the Banff Mountain Film Festival will be held on February February 25 and 26th. Several TTC members are planning on going on the 26th, but go whenever you can - it's always a great event! Get your tickets in advance if you can - this is a popular show.
  • A non-cycling, great family event supporting a great cause - and it will be warm by then! On June 8, the American Cancer Society's George Washington Bridge Challenge will take place. Your choice of 5K or 10K walk or run - and you can't beat the views or the cause! Entry fee is 20% off until March 1 - don't delay! If someone registers and starts a Team Town Cycle team, let us know - we'll get the word out!
Stay tuned for more updates - and stay warm!
