IMPORTANT!!!

Sorry for the late notice, but we just found out that several people from the NJ State Park Service are going to be touring Jungle Habitat tomorrow morning, Saturday December 19. They are doing so to gather information to decide the future of the park. We would like to show as many people as possible using the park (legally). It doesn't need to be riding - bring your dog (leashed please!), hike with your kids - whatever! They will be there from 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning until about 10:30 a.m. We'd really like to have a good show of force in terms of use, so if you could spare some time, we'd really appreciate it!

No Wednesday night ride for December 9th

Between the snow on the ground (yes, for those of you south of West Milford - we got more than 6" on Sat!), and the mess that is coming tonight and tomorrow, we're going to stay inside and watch the yule log video on Wednesday night. Check back in with us later in the week - we'll try to get something together for this weekend, weather permitting!

Wednesday night ride CANCELED!

We're going to plan for our Wednesday night ride - be ready to ride by 6:30, meeting at Town Cycle. As usual this time of year, weather can be a factor. There is supposed to be some rain moving in tomorrow night - some places say later at night, some a little earlier. Check back in with us on our blog or at Twitter by 4-4:30, and we'll let you know if we need to cancel!

As always, please have your lights fully charged, and bring your red flasher light with you, as we have a short distance to travel by road to get to our destination. Any questions, you know where to find us! info@teamtowncycle.com

Jungle Habitat Caution

A very disturbing event has occurred in Jungle Habitat which we feel we should notify our local riders about. Please read the announcement over at JORBA's site - http://tinyurl.com/yawgrnf . We urge everyone to exercise caution if riding in the area, and if you see anything suspicious, don't touch anything - please call the West Milford Police at 911 immediately. JORBA will work with some local trail ambassadors to make sure our mountain biking trails are cleared within the next few days - check back at the JORBA site as they list the trails that have been checked.

Wednesday Night Ride

We're back to Wednesday for our night ride this week - hopefully the weather holds! We'll meet at Town Cycle, and please be ready to roll by 6:30 p.m. Don't forget to check those lights, and bring a red flashing light if you have one, as we have a short roll on the road to get to our ride. Rain will cancel - we'll update here and on Twitter if we have to cancel.

As always, any questions, drop us a line - info@teamtowncycle.com . See you out there!

Cyclocross at the Hidden Valley Club Results!

Thanks so much to all of the riders, spectators and volunteers who came out for our first ever cyclocross race at the Hidden Valley Club on Sunday. The weather was perfection, the course spectacular, and the whole event a complete success!

The results are posted through the link on the sidebar, and we'll try to get some pictures up in the next day or so. Again, thanks so much for all of your support!

Cyclocross Set Up Incentives!

We're looking for some help for set-up on Saturday, November 7 for our cyclocross race. It'll mostly be help putting in the posts and string the tape - no heavy lifting. Weather is supposed to be great! We're planning this for 1-4 p.m. If you come out and help, and race on Sunday, we'll give you preferred call up selection - right behind the current NJ CX Cup leaders. Depending on your class, it could mean the difference between starting in the front row or the back of the pack! This offer applies whether you are a Team Town Cycle member or not - come out and help on Sat., we'll let you pick your starting spot after the Cup leaders pick theirs!

As always, any questions - info@teamtowncycle.com . And hey - thanks!

Night Ride, November 3

Hey folks -

Due to life and stuff, we're changing up our night ride from Wednesday to Tuesday this week. New, different secret location! Meet us at 6 p.m. at the end of Cherry Ridge Road (off Clinton Road - access from the Warwick Tpke. side), and we'll ride for about 2 hours or so. As usual - check those lights! You don't want to be the one walking out of the woods in the pitch black - after all, the bears aren't hibernating yet!

As usual, any questions, drop us a line - info@teamtowncycle.com .

Mountain Biking at Mahlon!

First things first - Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend - October 31st to be exact! So, after you've gone to all of your Halloween parties, or are coming down from your Halloween candy sugar high, make sure you set your clock back one hour before you go to bed! If you don't, you'll miss ...

.... Mountain biking at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation on Sunday, November 1 at 8:30 a.m. We'll meet at the Saffin Pond parking area, and we'll ride for 3 hours or so, moderate pace. Moderate or heavy rain will cancel.

Don't forget, we're also doing a beginners cyclocross ride at Hidden Valley on Sat., October 31 at noon. More details here - http://teamtowncycle.blogspot.com/2009/10/halloween-cyclocross-ride.html

See you out there!

Wednesday Night Ride

::::::::::::: UPDATE :::::::::::::
Due to weather, we are canceling tonight's ride. We'll try again next week!

Another Wednesday night ride this week! This time we'll try a different locale. Meet us (in your cars!) at the Lukoil gas station at the corner of Oak Ridge/Berkshire Valley Road and Ridge Road in Jefferson at 6:15 p.m. - carpool if you can! We'll caravan to the trailhead (secret destination - shhh!) and ride for 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Please check out your lights before Wednesday night - make sure they charge fully and will last the whole ride! Rain cancels the ride. As always, any questions, let us know - info@teamtowncycle.com .

Halloween Cyclocross Ride

Up for some scary fun on Halloween? Come check out our cyclocross ride on Sat., October 31 from noon to 2 p.m. at Hidden Valley Club in Vernon, NJ. Not exactly sure what cyclocross is? Come find out! You don't need a special bike - your mountain bike is fine! We'll have some veteran cyclocross racers in our group to show us the finer points of carrying our bike over obstacles or the fastest way to mount and dismount. We'll practice riding over typical cyclocross terrain - short climbs, varied terrain (dirt, grass, gravel, pavement - even sand!), and maybe even try our hand at stairs!

For those of you who are racing at our race on Nov. 8th, please note - this is NOT a race pre-ride! Some of the course will be marked or obviously laid out, but certainly not all of it. We're really just there to check out the varied terrain, improve our bike handling, and find out a little more about cyclocross. Meet us by the tennis courts off of Curtis Drive by noon - with or without costume - and see what it's all about!

As always, any questions, please let us know - info@teamtowncycle.com !

Night Ride!

OK, the infernal rain has stopped, so let's try another night ride - Wednesday, October 21. Same deal as last week - meet at Town Cycle, be ready to roll by 6:30. We wait for no one! Please, please - if you haven't gone night riding in a while, charge and test your lights before then! Don't be the person we either mock or swear at - you know, the one whose lights die 1/2 hour into the ride! A red flasher is important too, as we have a short ride on the road.

Any questions, let us know. Weather looks ok, but we'll update to our Twitter page if canceling.

Team Town Cycle Year End Dinner

Come join us on November 13, 2009 for a year end celebration of Team Town Cycle! We will be having food, drinks, awards and recognition, plus a slide show. We will also have a one time club member discounted purchase of Trek, Gary Fisher and Bontrager gear, with product reps available. More details to follow!

The evening is free to all current Team Town Cycle members - yes, FREE! For anyone who joins the team that evening - free! All are welcome - for non-members, the cost is $25 per person or $50 per family, payable at the door. We'll be at the High Crest Lake Lodge, High Crest Drive, West Milford from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. If you didn't get an email invitation via Evite, let us know - we'll put you on the list!

We are also having another food drive - this time with incentives! Donate food, and we'll give you a raffle ticket for a prize drawing. Maybe you'll get rewarded for doing good. Our local food pantries are really struggling - they are in desperate need of canned vegetables, meat, beans, pasta, rice, personal care items (shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste), and grocery store gift cards. Come on, we're buying you dinner - let's help out someone who is isn't as lucky.

Please RSVP by 11/9/09 via Evite. We hope you all can make it - and as usual, if you have any questions, please contact us - info@teamtowncycle.com.

Night Ride!

OK, there are lots of things to like about October - pretty leaves, cooling temperatures, Halloween candy, Octoberfest beers .... but not the shortening daylight hours. So we're getting creative - it's time for night riding! Meet us at Town Cycle with your mountain bike, and be ready to ride at 6:30. We wait for no one, so please be on time! We'll ride at a moderate pace for about 2 hours. Rain will cancel our ride. We'll update here and on our Twitter page if canceled.

IMPORTANT - Make sure you've charged and tested out your lights - have something as a backup if you're unsure. Also make sure you have a rear flasher, as we will have one short stretch of road to ride to get to our destination. Please, please, PLEASE - don't be that person! Nothing ruins a night ride faster than riding in the woods in the dark with no lights. Forget the boogie man or the bears - those rocks and trees are going to reach out and grab you faster than you can say "Boo!" Mike does have lights available for sale at the shop, but don't expect to go in there on Wednesday at 6 to buy them, and then use them that night - they will need to be charged!

Any questions - email us here! info@teamtowncycle.com Hope to see you Wednesday!

Weekend agenda

Our big weekend agenda? Well, we don't have one! With the last two weekends being chock full of racing, riding, trail work and team activities, we're taking the weekend off. We suggest you check out the Autumn Lights Festival taking place in West Milford on Sat. More info here - http://www.westmilford175.com/alf.php . It's a great old fashioned street fair, and always a lot of fun for all!

We'll be back in a few days with a few announcements - including one that will require your night riding lights! So plug those lights in to charge, and have a great weekend!

Rain, rain, go away!

UPDATE: We're on! The ground might be a little soggy, but the wet stuff has stopped falling from the sky, so we're going to give it a try. Remember - details here - http://tinyurl.com/yemffwt

OK, which one of you crossed the rain gods? Didn't we pay enough dues last weekend? Well, we're going to try and maintain a positive attitude. We're going to wait until tomorrow to see how the weather shakes out in the morning before we cancel our Beginners Ride/IMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day. Check back tomorrow morning - we'll try to update by 11 a.m. here, or on our Twitter page - http://twitter.com/teamtowncycle .

In the meanwhile, we welcome any extra karma points, voodoo dolls, lucky rabbits' foot or anything else you can spare in the good will department!

Rumble in the Jungle Results!

OK, here they are! Click on the link for the 2009 Rumble in the Jungle results!

http://www.teamtowncycle.com/docs/RIJfinalv2.pdf

Congratulations to everyone who was brave enough to come out in less that perfect weather and try out our course - next year we'll try to order up some better weather!

UPDATE: We had 2 snafu's on the list, one in the Men's Cat. 2 40-44 class, and one in the Men's Cat. 3 30-39 class. Both have been corrected (it will show corrected on the link), and we sincerely apologize for the errors. Thanks for your understanding!

Thank You, Rides and Racing

First off, we would like to say a big THANKS to all of you who were brave enough to come out to our Rumble in the Jungle race on Sunday, September 27. Yes it was damp - very damp - ok, wet! Despite the rain, the course held up well, and a good time was had by all. We had a great turn out, and we appreciate everyone's support! Race results will be posted later tonight.

Next - rides! This weekend's mountain bike race is going to be at Ringwood State Park, so we will lead a couple of pre-rides there this week. On Wed., Sept. 30, we'll meet at the Shepherd's Lake parking lot at 5 p.m., so we can squeeze a decent ride in before dark.

If you can't make it Wednesday, we'll be at the same place, same time on Thursday. 5 p.m., Shepherd's Lake parking lot.

On Sat., we have two activities going. First off is a trail work event at Jungle Habitat. We'll meet at 8:30 a.m., and work until 11:30 a.m. We'll check the trails for damage from the race, work on some new areas, maybe do a bit of marking. If you are a few hours short on your PayDirt points, this will give you a chance to pick up some more. PayDirt closes on October 9, so you are running out of time!

Our second event on Saturday, October 3 is our Beginners Ride and Clinic! It's free! It's for all ages, kid to grandparent, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Read more about it here - http://www.teamtowncycle.com/docs/JourneyJungleClinicflyerV2.pdf . Please let us know if you have any questions. We'll have snacks and giveaways, courtesy of JORBA, IMBA and Town Cycle, so bring a friend, a spouse, or a kid and join us! Rain will cancel our event, so let's keep our fingers crossed. REQUESTED - we collected several bags full of groceries at last weekends' race for donation to our local food pantry. Since this event is free, we're hoping you all can pitch in a few more non-perishable items to add to our total! Canned or other non-perishable items only please!

Sunday, October 4 is the final race in the Campmor H2H series - the Leafblower, at Ringwood State Park. If you're not racing, come cheer our team on in this final race for the season - it's local, the leaves are turning, and it'd be great to have some support for our racers.

Rumble in the Jungle Race Reminders

It's only 2 days away - the Campmor H2H Race #7 - the Rumble in the Jungle! The trails in Jungle Habitat are all groomed, marked and ready to ride. All we need now is you! Before you come, we have three reminders for you.

First - we hope you read about our food drive. If possible, please bring a canned or other non- perishable item with you to the race so we can help re-stock our local food pantry. We know times are tough, but we also know we have a great community - let's show everyone else how big our hearts are!

Secondly, esp. for those who are pre-riding on Saturday, there is an airshow taking place next door at the Greenwood Lake Airport. The spectators will be parking in the Jungle Habitat lot on Saturday only. If you are coming to pre-ride, expect extra traffic in and out, and possible parking complications. Just leave yourself some extra time.

Lastly, on Sunday, if you are racing early, then hoping to catch the air show, you must move your car out of the JH lot. Our permit dictates that the gates be closed by 4 p.m., and your car will be locked in if you leave it in the lot. The NJ State Park supervisor went through a lot of trouble to make sure we wouldn't have to deal with air show spectator parking during our event, and we really want to respect their wishes to have those gates locked at 4 p.m. If your car gets locked in, you'll have to call the police to let you out, and no one likes doing that! We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

As a way to whet your appetite for Sunday, have a look at the video of riding at Jungle Habitat made by Art and Ellen White. It's just great - make sure your speakers are on! http://gallery.me.com/ellenandart#100187 . Thanks Art and Ellen - lovely work as always!

As always, any questions, let us know. Other than a bit of rain predicted for Sat. night, our day looks good - hope to see lots of you out there!

Rumble in the Jungle Food Drive

For all of you who are planning to attend the Campmor H2H Rumble in the Jungle race this weekend (Sept. 27) at Jungle Habitat, we are asking you to bring a canned or non-perishable food item to the race. Pasta, beans, canned vegetables, fruit, fish - all our items our local food pantries can use. We know times are tight for everyone, but if each rider bought just one food item, we'd have a couple of hundred donations to give - and a lot of thankful hearts.

We know that our community is a generous group - let's show the rest of the world as well!

Please contact us at info@teamtowncycle.com with any questions - and THANK YOU!

Take a Picture!

Take a look at our side bar - we now have a photo gallery! Click on the Flickr link, and you can see a bunch of photos of Team Town Cycle in action. We'll be adding to it in the next few weeks, so make sure to check back in and see if you can spot yourself!

If you have any pictures of Team Town Cycle you'd like us to include in the gallery, email them to us w/your name, (so we can give you proper credit), and where you took them, and we'll add them to our slideshow!

Announcement! Our First Cyclocross Race!

Team Town Cycle is thrilled to announce that we are sponsoring our first cyclocross race! There have been lots of people working behind the scenes to iron out all of the details - so here they are!

  • When: November 8, 2009
  • Where: The Hidden Valley Club, Vernon, NJ
  • Who: Anyone who rides!
  • Why: Why not?!!

Our race will be the 5th race in the NJ Cross Cup series. For more information about the NJ Cross Cup Series, check out http://www.njbikeracing.com. For the nitty gritty details of our particular race, check out our flyer at http://teamtowncycle.com/docs/cyclocrossflyerv1.pdf, see the link on the side bar to the left, or follow the link on the "Races" page of our website at www.teamtowncycle.com .

We're so psyched about this, and can't wait for this new gig. As always, please leave a comment or email us at info@teamtowncycle.com with any questions!

Rumble in the Jungle Race Course Updates

PLEASE REMEMBER: For those who are racing on Sunday, please don't forget we're asking everyone to bring a canned good or other non-perishable food item for donation to our local food pantry!

Many of you have asked for a course update for next weekend's Campmor H2H race, our very own Rumble in the Jungle. Because this is still a newer park, and we are constantly building new trails, we don't have everything GPS'd yet. (It's our big winter season goal!)

For those of you who raced here previously, there will be a good portion of the course that, while not exactly the same, will be similar to last years. One large difference is that the big hill climb has been eliminated, and we will be substituting a different section in for that. For all others, the course will be fully marked by Friday, Sept. 25, so you will be able to pre-ride Friday and Saturday.

NOTE TO ALL WHO PLAN TO PRE-RIDE SATURDAY - There is an airshow taking place next door at Greenwood Lake Airport on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, the parking lot will be all ours, but on Saturday, the lot will be used by air show spectators. We will still have full access to the park and all the trails. You will have lots of extra people to contend with, so expect to spend extra time getting in and out of the park!

As always, let us know if you have questions. It's almost race day - get out and ride!

Bike Fests and Fat Tire Fun

After we get through today's rain, it looks like a good weekend, so here's what's on tap for this weekend!

On Saturday, Sept. 12, our good friends at JORBA are having their second annual JORBA Fest at the Waterloo Village Concert Field in Stanhope, NJ. Several of our club members attend the Fest last year, and had nothing but good things to say! Demo bikes, kids rides, beginner, intermediate and advanced rides, skills clinics, swag raffles, shows by our local trials legend Jeff Lenosky - all part of the adventure! Check out the details and schedule at http://www2.jorba.org/index.php?title=Fest . Bring your helmet and have some fun!

Also on Saturday, for any of our mountain bike racers, we will be pre-riding the Sept. 13 Blue Mountain Reservation race course. Meet us at 10 a.m. at in the parking lot at Blue Mountain. For directions, please check this link out - http://www.wmba.org/PDF/Blue-Mtn-map-rev3.pdf . For those who are curious, here is the race course map - http://www.wmba.org/racemap.html . Of course, you don't need to be a racer to join us - just be aware it will be more of a race-paced ride! ATTENTION!!! Due to rain, we'll postpone our ride until noon!!!!!

And Sunday, either come ride or cheer our racers on as they tackle the 6th race in the Campmor H2H series, The Chain Stretcher, at Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill, NY.

Don't forget - our own contribution to the Campmor H2H series, The Rumble in the Jungle, is coming up on September 27 at our own Jungle Habitat! Be there or be square!

Labor Day weekend rides

Woohoo - a long weekend! Plenty of time to spend with the family and still get a good ride in! Here are our plans - hope you can join us.

Friday - our usual (and probably final!) regular Clinton Road ride. Meet us at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Inn on Rt. 23 in Newfoundland. Because of the shortening daylight hours, we'll probably have to call the Friday night rides after this week, so we hope you can join us.

Sunday - we're going on a road trip! Tune up your mountain bike - we're headed to the Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill, NY. We'll meet at Town Cycle (1468 Union Valley Road, West Milford) at 8:30 a.m. We can car pool or you can follow us - or meet us at Blue Mountain. Directions can be found here - http://www.wmba.org/Maps.html . It takes just over an hour to get there, and we'll plan to ride for at least 3 hours. It'll be a moderately paced ride, so all are welcome. It's a nice change of pace from our usual hants, and a great place to ride.

See - plenty of time to mow the lawn and throw back a few beers! As always, any questions, let us know. Enjoy the three day weekend!

Beginners Ride and Clinic at Jungle Habitat

UPDATE - Because the airshow that is taking place at the Greenwood Lake Airport will be using the Jungle Habitat Parking Lot on Sat. (only - it will not interfere with our race on Sunday!), and in consultation with with State Park Supervisors' office, we have decided for safety's sake to reschedule our Beginner Ride/Clinic for the following weekend - October 3. All other details remain the same! We're sorry for the inconvenience, and hope you'll still be able to join us! !

A lot of you out there are seasoned mountain biking veterans. Bunny hopping logs, four hour long treks through the woods, slick downhill descents - all these things are old hat to you. You laugh in the face of technical single track! Grueling uphills - so what?! You don't scare easily.

However, there may be people in your life that are not so, well ... accomplished. Maybe your husband/wife/ boyfriend/girlfriend is a bit more timid than you. Maybe you have already tried to share your mad mountain biking skills with your significant other, and it has resulted in nothing more than the need for relationship counseling, or at least a chilly car ride home with the vow of "Never again" muttered by one of you! Maybe your son or daughter would like to follow in your footsteps, but would sooner take advice from Bigfoot than you when it comes to the best way to climb that hill, or adjust their grip.

If that's the case, then we have the perfect event for you. On Sat., October 3, 2009, we will be hosting a beginners ride and clinic at Jungle Habitat. Every age is welcome - kids to seniors. All you need is a helmet, decent footwear (sneakers are OK), and a bike. For the kids, it doesn't need to be a geared mountain bike - something with tires that are suitable for off-road riding is fine! We will be meeting at 12 p.m., and we'll spend between 1.5 and 2 hours checking out some of the easier trails at Jungle Habitat. We'll break into small groups, and spend a little time with the basics before we hit the trails. It'll be a win-win for everyone - gain a little knowledge about the Jungle Habitat trails and mountain biking all in one shot!

The best part - it's free! You will be asked to sign a waiver (our insurance sponsor, USA Cycling requires it), and kids must have a parent or guardian present (the parent or guardian doesn't need to ride if they don't want to, but of course you are welcome to!) - but that's it! Bring some water, and some sunscreen or bug repellent if you would like. Anything more than light rain will cancel the event, but we're optimistic that it'll be just fine.

A flyer with every detail will be on the left sidebar shortly - spread the word! Tell your friends! Show some love! And as always, if you have any questions, please leave a comment or contact us at info@teamtowncycle.com .

Ladies Night Swan Song

Due to the shortening daylight hours, this Wednesday, Sept. 2, will be our last Ladies Night road ride on Clinton Road. If you've been waiting for a chance to ride with us - this is it! We'll meet, as usual, at the Village Square Inn on Rt. 23 in Newfoundland. We'll be there at 6 p.m. - we hope you will too!

Monday, August 31, 2009

Last Chance for weekday fun!

Due to the shortening daylight hours (wah!), this week will be our last I Dig Tuesday and Wednesday mountain bike rides. Sad, we know, but we'll come up with some new fun soon.

So - Tuesday, 5:30, Jungle Habitat - come join us for our weekday trail build finale. You bring the gloves and the water, we'll bring the tools.

And on Wednesday, we'll have our final after work mountain bike ride at Jungle Habitat for the year. Let's try to push off by 5:30 - it'll be all we can do to get 2 hours of riding in!

Stay tuned for announcements of new trail work dates, and hopefully some night riding opportunities - hey, we've gotta ride sometime, right?

King of the Mountain Results, and a Reminder!

Our KOM event for August 23 had a wet start. Eventually the clouds parted and gave us some sunshine to ride in. Unfortunately it was accompanied by a lot of humidity so staying dry at any point was not an option!

This week's riders were all team members or racers. We especially enjoyed the competition from our friend and Team Bulldog member Ryan Heershap who showed up and put up a good fight!

The first climb up Stonetown Road might be short, but it is VERY steep. Dave and Keith broke away at about the halfway point and fought it out with Dave coming in first, Keith second, Ryan third, BJ fourth, and Matt fifth.

Before climb number 2 (Westbrook Road), Kevin caught up and we all paced up to the start. From the start of the climb. Dave, Keith, BJ, and Ryan set a high pace up the first pitch. Dave, Ryan, and Keith pulled away. BJ dropped but fought hard to prevent too big of a gap between himself and Matt. By the time the riders made it to the Coffee House the finishing order was Dave, Keith, Ryan, BJ, Matt, and Kevin.

The final climb up Otterhole Road was a good one. At the first pitch it was a repeat of the Westbrook climb with the three leaders opening up a gap on the rear guard. BJ was able to bridge and attack on the last pitch but was quickly pulled in by Dave and Keith. Ryan flatted on the attack, which left third place for BJ. The points on the final climb were therefore awarded to Dave, Keith, and BJ.

Great job to all who braved the elements. and a huge thank you to our favorite bike shop owner Mike from Town Cycle for providing the prizes to the winner of each climb.

The points for the day look like this...
Dave Kahl - 9
Keith Halla - 6
BJ Kisch - 3

(Ryan was not awarded points due to non membership, but it was agreed by the group he would be eligible for premiums)

The next and final KOM will be next Sunday, August 30. We will ride the original route, rain or shine. Come on out and take a wack at these hills - the payoff is worth every bit of it. There will also be some special "Super Premiums" for everyone who shows!

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Tuesday and Wednesday fun!

A little late, but a quick reminder that we are at Jungle Habitat this afternoon at 5:30 p.m. Come take advantage of a weeknight trail build while they're still around! It's not raining and not sweltering for a change, so bring some water and gloves and we'll provide the tools.

Tomorrow we are going to take our show on the road and mountain bike ride at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson. Let's try to be ready to ride at 5:30 p.m., as the daylight hours are shortening already. Meet at the Saffin Pond Visitors Center parking lot. If you need more info or directions, try this link - http://www.morrisparks.net/aspparks/mahlondir.asp . This is a really fun area to ride - once you try it, you're sure to go back!

King of the Mountain reminder!

We know it's hot, we know it's August, we know it's vacation time... but come ride with us anyway!

Friday night - barring weather complications, we'll do the usual Friday night road ride, meeting at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Inn, Rt. 23, Newfoundland.

Sunday - it's part ???? (we've had some rainouts!) of our King of the Mountain competition! We're going to do the route that got rained out last time, as the Renaissance Fair is still in town. We'll stay in New Jersey instead, and do Stonetown, Westbrook, and Otterhole. Still three climbs, still prizes and points, still meeting at Town Cycle and still leaving at 9 a.m. on the dot!

Hope to see you out there! Any questions, well, you know the drill .... info@teamtowncycle.com !

Trail work, Ladies Road Ride, and Wildcat Redux

Yes, it's hot, but that's not going to stop us - we'll be at Jungle Habitat on Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. to do some work. Bring plenty of fresh water, and we'll supply the tools!

Wednesday finds us with our standing Ladies road ride on Clinton Road. We'll meet as usual at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Inn. All levels of ability are welcome!

And finally, we're going to try this again - hopefully we won't get rained out again! A change of pace for our Wednesday mountain bike ride this week - Wildcat Ridge! We'll meet at a small dirt parking lot on Meridan Road off Green Pond Road in Rockaway, NJ at 5:30 p.m. For those driving from West Milford, it will be a left off of Green Pond Road after you travel past Lake Telemark and throught the town of Hibernia. For those coming off of Rt. 80, it will be on your right before you get to Hibernia (and before you start climbing the mountain.) See this map if you are unfamiliar with the area- http://tinyurl.com/mdup6k . The map from Google shows Heddy Road coming off of Green Pond Road, but we're pretty sure the street sign say Meridan. This Mapquest map shows it a bit differently - http://tinyurl.com/leulff . Any questions about the area, give us a shout.

The dirt parking lot is on the left less than 1/4 of a mile in off of Green Pond Road. The riding will be a medium paced ride on a combination of newer single track and fire roads. It'll be a great change of pace for us - come join us!

There you have it - a little something for everyone!

Weekend planning

OK, here's hoping the weather gods will let us have a full ride schedule this weekend! This is what we have in store -

Friday - our usual weekend warm-up, the Friday night Clinton Road ride. Meet us at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Inn, Rt. 23, Newfoundland. We always have all different ability levels, so don't be a chicken - come out and ride!

Saturday - Club member Mike Moskowitz will lead a beginner/moderately paced mountain bike ride at Waywayanda State Park on Sat. a.m. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at the boat launch parking lot. This is a great ride for newbies or for those who haven't ridden much lately, so get up early and get it in gear! In case of rain, we'll ride in a light drizzle only - any more that, we'll pull the covers back over our heads.

And finally, on Sunday, Gerard and Tom will be leading a Clydesdale mountain bike ride through the wonderful and scenic watershed of northern NJ. The ride will leave Tom's house at 30 Gould Road around 11:00 AM on Sunday. Non-Clydesdales (anyone weighing less than 200 lbs) will be required to sign a "No Hammering Pledge" or submit to carrying enough sand and rocks in their Camelbacks to compensate for the lighter weight and even the playing field. Gerard says he's bringing the Knob Creek flask he won at the Kahl Triathlon, and the route will take us past a couple of local watering holes, so you may want to bring a couple bucks. It should be an interesting ride!

Any questions, let us know!

Correction - I Dig Tuesday CANCELED 8/4

Here's a message from Jeff Mergler at JORBA -

Sorry for the late notice but personal commitments will keep Dave,
Bogert and I from leading the normally scheduled trail work tonight.
(4 August 2009).

If you are looking to top off Pay Dirt or are looking to better your
chances for the Cyclecraft/Bicycle Hub raffle, or you are looking for
another volunteer activity, please consider another park nearby, such
as Wawayanda (this Sunday), Allamuchy on Wednesdays or come back and see us
next Tuesday when we resume work on the otter slide trail.

Also, if you are looking to do some ad-hoc work, we could really use
some volunteers to go in and clip some face slappers and other light
trail maintenance. If you're interested in that, please contact us
directly at jungle at jorba.org

Thanks!

Let's ride!

OK, while we still work to dodge the rain, we have a few weekday opportunities for you. As usual, Tuesdays we have our I Dig Tuesdays trail work session at Jungle Habitat. Good for working on those Pay Dirt points if you are a racer, and good for everyone as we create more trails to ride on!

Wednesday we are going to try again for our new trail location. Club member Greg Muniz has a new area of trails in the Awosting area that he is anxious to show us. Meet us at 5:30 at Greg's house, 7 Greenwood Avenue in the Awosting section of West Milford. There is a chance of rain - heavy rain will cancel, but if it's light, we'll give it a go!

Lastly, there is our usual Wednesday ladies road ride on Clinton Road - meet at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Inn. All ability levels welcome! Rain will cancel.

Stay tuned for our weekend schedule, coming to a computer near you soon!

King of the Mountain Route Revised

For any interested parties, we're going to revise the King of the Mountain route for August 2nd. So we don't get run over by all the wenches and knights at the opening weekend of the Renaissance Festival over in Sterling Forest, we're going to abandon that route all together. We'll stay in New Jersey instead, and do Stonetown, Westbrook, and Otterhole. Still three climbs, still prizes and points, still meeting at Town Cycle and leaving at 9 a.m. on the dot!

Any questions, let us know!

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Weekend Fun!

OK, one more day of rain to dodge, then we should be good for a few days! Here's what we have planned for the weekend - come play if you can!

Friday - barring severe weather, we'll do our usual Friday night Clinton Road ride. Usual time, usual place - 6 p.m., The Village Square Inn, Rt. 23, Newfoundland.

Saturday - Two rides available. Club member Mike Moskowitz will lead an early morning beginner to moderately paced mountain bike ride at Ringwood State Park. Meet at 7:30 a.m. in Parking Lot A - it's the one you would park in if you were visiting the Botanical Gardens. Ride will last 1.5 to 2 hours. Our other option for a Saturday ride is a road ride at 4 p.m. leaving from Town Cycle. We'll ride around Greenwood Lake, up Warwick Tpk., and return via Clinton Road to Town Cycle.

Sunday - the fifth installment of our King of the Mountain series! To give you all a new challenge, we'll run the course backwards from our usual way. We will leave Town Cycle promptly at 9 a.m. - no waiting for stragglers! We'll have our usual prizes for climb winners, and of course, points towards our end of year championship.

As always, we're always looking for more ride leaders - let us know if you're interested!

Wednesday Mountain Bike Ride Canceled!

Hey folks -

Between the rain and the illness of our host (get well soon, Greg!) - we are going to cancel tonight's ride over in Awosting. We'll re-schedule as soon as possible - whenever this infernal rain stops, that is!

King of the Mountain, Part 4 Results!

Without further delay ...

The weather was perfect for some self abuse on the hills surrounding our wonderful town. We were stoked to have a few new club members show up and throw down with us!

In the club members category, newcomer Mike W. won all three climbs closely followed by another KOM rookie. John Marshall. That left veteran club member Chris Donohue to clean up third on the peaks. Chris, I guess a house full of kids for the weekend was no help!

The race team members category had a new addition as well. Junior racer Dillon Van Wart upgraded to join us. Although he received no points on the day, he was not last on any of the climbs by any means. No, no, no - last place on all three climbs was reserved for BJ. The winner of each of the three peaks, to no one's surprise, was our club V.P. and newly crowned Cat 1 MTB NJ State Champion Dave Kahl. Second place was a bit of a battle between our favorite shop owner Mike Hoek and also newly crowned Cat 2 MTB NJ state champ Jason Grossi. Jason took third to Mike on the first climb, then second on the following two.

The overall points standings are as follows:

CLUB
Chris Donohue 14
Gerard Hawkins 10
Mike W. 9
Steve Boshart 8
John Marshall 6
Pete Tranes 4

RACING
David Kahl 18
Michael Hoek 13
Larry Towner 9
Dillon Van Wart 9
Keith 7
BJ Kisch 6
Jason Grossi 5
Dave Van Wart 3

LADIES
Karen B. 16
Angela B. 12
Heather K. 5

Thanks to all who joined us on Sunday. and big THANK YOU to TOWN CYCLE for providing the preems. The next scheduled KOM ride is August 2. There will be a route change for this one so come on out and get a fresh perspective on the ride.

Weekday events

Howdy all - three events for everyone this week. First is a reminder that we are still doing our I Dig Tuesdays trail work events at Jungle Habitat each Tuesday evening. Check our Calendar page at www.teamtowncycle.com for more details. We have lots of plans for the area, so please come out and join us!

Secondly is our Wednesday mountain bike ride - at a special location this week! Club member Greg Muniz has a new area of trails in the Awosting area that he is anxious to show us. Meet us at 5:30 at Greg's house, 7 Greenwood Avenue in the Awosting section of West Milford.

Finally, don't forget our Wednesday ladies road ride on Clinton Road. Meet us at the Village Square Inn on Rt. 23 in Newfoundland at 6 p.m. All ability levels welcome!

As usual, the weather dictates all - a slight rain or quick splash/dash shower won't stop us, but steady rain or thunder and lightening will!

Monday, July 20, 2009

Wednesday rides

Just a quick reminder of a few weekday opportunities. Wednesday evenings we have a standing invitation for all of our women to join us for a road ride on Clinton Road. Meet at 6 p.m. at the Village Square Inn, Rt. 23, Newfoundland. We'll go out and back on Clinton Road. It's a great opportunity to practice riding in a pace line with a group.

This week's mountain bike ride will be at Waywayanda. Meet at the boat launch parking lot at 5:30. We'll ride in light rain only - anything more will cancel. All levels of expertise welcome!

Stay tuned for some announcements of alternate mountain bike ride locations over the next few weeks - time to try out some new places!

Weekend Agenda

Looking for a weekend ride? Look no further - we've got 'em! We're all about the road this weekend, so check out our schedule and squeeze in a ride or two between watching stages of the Tour de France!

Friday - usual time and place - Clinton Road, meeting at Village Square Inn, Rt. 23, Newfoundland, at 6 p.m. Weather might be dodgy - we'll ride in light rain only.

Saturday - meet at Town Cycle at 12 p.m. for a ride around Greenwood Lake. If the group wants, we can extend the route - we'll vote, majority rules! Again, we'll ride in a light rain.

Sunday - It's time for the 4th installment of our King of the Mountain series! Meet at Town Cycle, and please - be ready to roll at 9 a.m. - we wait for no one! Premiums for individual climbs, points for the series - we've had some new people join in, so all the categories are up for grabs!

Monday, July 13, 2009

Team Town Cycle gear now available at Town Cycle!

We've gotten lots of compliments on our new kits - now's your chance to own some too! There is a limited inventory of Team Town Cycle gear available now at Town Cycle. If you're looking for some new stuff, stop by the shop and check out what's available!

King of the Mountain, Part 3

The third installment of our King of the Mountain series happened on June 28, and we had some new faces join us! Over all three climbs, our Racers group was the picture of consistency - Larry Towner taking first, our intrepid bike shop owner Michael Hoek taking second, and David Van Wart taking third. Our club riders category was almost as consistent, with Dillon Van Wart taking first in all 3 climbs, Pete Tranes taking second on the first two climbs, and third on the last, and Steve Boshart taking third on the first two climbs, and pulling it out on the last climb to claim second place points. Our sole Womens group rider, Karen Bouloucon, claimed all of the climbing points for herself!

At the end of the day, the points awarded looked like this:

Racers:
Larry Towner - 9 points
Michael Hoek - 6 points
David Van Wart - 3 points

Club Riders (and 14 and unders)
Dillon Van Wart - 9 points
Pete Tranes - 5 points
Steve Boshart - 4 points

Womens
Karen Bouloucon - 9 points

Congratulations to all of our riders, great job!

It's not too late to join the series! With four dates left, there is plenty of time to catch up to anyone out there! The dates for the rest of the series are as follows: July 19, August 2, August 23, and August 30. All dates will meet at 9 a.m. sharp at Town Cycle, and will take approximately 3 hours. There are premiums as well as points available for each event, and prizes will be awarded at our fall Team Meeting, so come on out and join the fun! As always, any questions, let us know!

Weekend rides

Here's hoping the weather holds out for another good weekend of riding! Our plans for the weekend include these rides:

Friday night Clinton Road ride - 6 p.m., Village Square Inn, Rt. 23, Newfoundland. We need some new blood for our Friday night rides, so gather up some friends and join us! Our ride has all different ability levels, so we can accommodate novice to expert. Give it a try - it's a great way to start off the weekend!

Saturday - Race pre-ride, Kittatinny Valley State Park, Andover, NJ. Join David Kahl as he leads a beginner to sport level ride on the course for Sunday's race. Meet at the Goodale Road parking lot (not the lot by the airport!) at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Even if you are not racing on Sunday, it's still a great place to ride - definitely worth the drive! If you need directions, check this out - http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/kittval.html

Sunday is the Campmor H2H race at Kittatinny State Park in Andover, which is also the NJ State Championship Race. Team Town Cycle will be well represented there, so wish all of our riders luck!

We are always looking for people to lead rides, so if you have a place/route you'd like to see us do, please email us and we'll work something out!

Ch-ch-ch changes!

Hope you all had a great 4th - finally, the weather was our friend! Congratulations to all of our Team Town Cycle members who rode the Lewis Morris Challenge race on Sunday - nice job all!

We're going to cancel this week's I Dig Tuesday's trail work date at Jungle Habitat - we'll re-group and start fresh next week. And for Wednesday's mountain bike ride, we're going to change it up a bit and head to Kittatinny State Park in Andover, NJ for a race pre-ride. Even if you aren't racing, please come join us - it's a great place - completely different terrain than our own backyard, and a real blast to ride. We'll meet at the parking lot off of Goodale Road (not the lot by Lake Aeroflex and the airport) - let's try to be ready to ride at 6 p.m. Any questions, here is the website for the state park - http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/kittval.html

We're always looking for new faces - bring a friend and join us!

Wednesday Mountain Bike Ride-Jungle Habitat

Although normally we are not adverse to riding in a bit of rain, we may make an exception today. After yesterday's torrential downpour, (and the one on the day before, and the day before that, and the day before that ...) the woods are more swamp-like than woodsy. If it rains again this afternoon, we'll cancel tonight's mountain bike ride at Jungle Habitat - the trails are just too wet.

The good news is - they are predicting a dry weekend! We'll keep our fingers crossed for then.

Weekend rides

Well at long last, it looks like we're going to catch a break in the weather for a few days - whoohoo! No excuses for not getting out this weekend - come join us on one of our rides!

Friday - usual time and place. 6 p.m., parking lot of the Village Square Inn, Rt. 23, Newfoundland, NJ. Usual ride out Clinton Road, around Upper Greenwood Lake, and back down Clinton. Join us for a bite to eat afterwards at the Village Square Inn!

Saturday - Next weekend's Campmor H2H race is at Lewis Morris County Park in Morristown, NJ, so we thought we'd do a pre-ride at the park. Join us whether you are racing or not - it's a great park, and a nice change of terrain. We'll meet at 9 a.m. in the Sunrise Parking lot (near the lake). For more info, check out the Morris County Park's website - http://www.morrisparks.net/aspparks/lmmain.asp

Sunday - It's the third installment of Team Town Cycle's King of the Mountain series. Meet us at Town Cycle, and please be ready to leave at 9 a.m. - we wait for no one! We need some new challengers to push us along, so please come out and have some fun!

Come celebrate the good weather and the arrival of summer with a good head-clearing ride! Any questions, please let us know.

Change of Plans - Wednesday MTB ride

Well, the monsoon that has been the month of June seems to slowly be coming to an end - we hope! To that end, we're changing the location of our Wednesday ride to Ringwood - a place that sometimes handles the excess water a bit better than Jungle Habitat. Meet us at the Shepherd Lake parking lot - we'll be heading out at 6 p.m. Any questions, let us know - and keep your fingers crossed that the rain is finally ending!

Sunday, June 21, 2009

I Dig Tuesdays - do you?

Starting this Tuesday, June 23rd, (and every Tues thereafter-until
further notice) join us for I Dig Tuesdays. We'll be working at Jungle Habitat for a couple of hours after work, taking advantage of the extra daylight hours. If you need to "top off" your Pay Dirt points or just want to get some of the new trails done quicker (we have a lot of work to do!), please join us on Tuesday nights. Details:

We'll meet at the gate by 5:30 p.m. and head up to the pedestrian area, at
the base of Otter Slide. If you miss us and will be showing up late,
walk or ride up to the Otter Slide and look for the black Dodge Dakota
full of tools. We will be "up trail' working on Otter Slide, so just
grab a tool and walk up to meet us. We'll be out by dusk.

Please wear sturdy shoes and bring work gloves. We'll supply the
tools and something to drink.

Full details here: http://www2.jorba.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1243

Note: if you can't make JH on Tuesdays, you can always try Allamuchy
on Wed's or Ringwood on Thu's. See JORBA.org for details.

King of the Mountain, Part Deux!

Due to some technical difficulties, we're behind on a few items - like the results of the second Team Town Cycle KOM event of the season! Without further delay, here it is ....

After a late start, the competition took off on the first climb. One of our sponsors, Keith Hala of The Hidden Valley Club, hooked on to Dave Kahl’s wheel and kept the pace high for Dave, challenging him for the top spot on the first climb. Mike Hoek, after dropping BJ Kisch like a hot rock, took third behind Dave and Keith. The Club competition was strong with Gerard Hawkins sprinting to the line to take KOM points from Chris Donohue. The women had a strong showing with Karen B. taking the first climb with a huge gap over Angela Barrett and Heather Kahl.

After a detour through the beautiful farmlands of New York State the climbing started again on the slopes of Mt. Peter. Dave got off to a delayed start but quickly made up time on Mike and BJ. Keith was another story. After a hard push Dave just didn't have enough mountain left to beat Keith to the top. This one went to the sponsor. Not to be beaten again, Chris opened up a gap over Gerard and never looked back. Angela, defending her current points lead, followed Chris' tactic and put a commanding gap between herself and second place Karen. Heather came in a close third on Mt Peter.

The decent down into Greenwood Lake was harrowing for a few of the riders. BJ lost a bottle in the first turn creating a spinning hazard for the chasers to dodge. And just to keep Heather on her toes a serious case of speed wobbles crept up on her while getting near 40 MPH. She was able to maintain control and steady her bike enough to roll into town for a water stop.

The third and final climb reminded us all that it’s never over until it’s over. When it was all finally over the finishing order looked like this: Dave, Keith and Mike for the team riders. Chris overtook Gerard on the climb and had his sights set on Mike, but ran out of time to reel him in. For the ladies, it was Heather, Karen and then Angela.

So the points for the day look like this:

Club Riders

Gerard = 7

Chris = 5

Women

Karen = 7

Angela = 6

Heather = 5

Racers

Dave = 8

Keith = 7

Mike = 3

The Overall Totals year-to-date:

Club Riders

Chris D = 11

Gerard = 10

Women

Angela = 12

Karen = 7

Heather = 5

Racers

Dave K = 8

Keith = 7

BJ = 6

Mike = 3

Be sure to join us on our next King of the Mountain ride. It's coming up soon-Sunday, June 28th. If you're going to join us, (and really, we hope you do - we need some challengers!) please be ready to ride at 9 a.m.! Check out our calendar at www.teamtowncycle.com for more info on the ride.

Wednesday Ride Cancellation

Due to the extraordinary amount of rain we've had this week (seriously - can anyone say rain forest?), we're going to cancel our regular Wednesday mountain bike ride because most of the trails are just too too wet. Let's keep our fingers crossed that next week will be a little drier!

Friday, June 12, 2009

:::: NEWS FLASH!!!::::: UNIFORMS HAVE ARRIVED!!!:::

It's about damn time, we know - but THE UNIFORMS ARE FINALLY HERE! Yes, this is a little last minute, but we're going to be distributing the all new Team Town Cycle gear TOMORROW, June 13th, at Town Cycle, 1468 Union Valley Road, West Milford from 3-6 p.m. If you can't make it then, please get in touch with us at info@teamtowncycle.com, and we'll try to make other arrangements for you.

Our new gear looks great, the weather is improving - so you have no more excuses! Our club has 110 members, and yet we see a lot of the same people each ride. (Not that we don't love our regulars, of course!) Please, please come out and join us for a ride soon, even if only to show off the new threads! We are always looking for new ideas for rides and activities, so if you have one, please let us know - we're always up for something different!

Updates, updates, and more updates!

OK, a few housekeeping items. First, yes we know that you are all anxiously awaiting the arrival of our new uniforms. We had hoped to have them this week, but alas, it was not meant to be. We should have some news for you in the next few days!

Rides - yes, despite the rain, we are still out there riding! Tonight will be our usual Friday night road ride - meet us at 6 p.m. at the usual place, the Village Square Inn parking lot.

Saturday we will also ride Clinton Road. Our intrepid ladies, Heather and Karen, will lead a club paced road ride. It's good practice for our Sunday New Paltz ride! Please be ready to ride at 11:00 a.m.!

Speaking of Sunday, this is your last chance to RSVP for our New Paltz ride! We will leave the shop at 9 a.m. sharp. There will be 2 distances for this ride. The first distance is a 40-50 mile ride to New Paltz, followed by lunch at the Gilded Otter Brew Pub. Remember, to participate in this ride you need to coordinate a ride back home. Feel free to communicate through the website/blog if you need a ride back, or if you have any extra seats in your vehicle to offer!

The second ride be a round trip to New Paltz and back - approx. 90-100 miles. We will do our best to make it a true "century" (100 mile ride) even if it means an extra lap around Pinecliff Lake on the way home. We'll ride up with the group, grab a quick snack or burrito, and turn our wheels south again for the trip home.

While both rides do not cover much vertical climbing, 50 (or 100!) miles is still 50 (or 100!) miles, no matter what the pace. We will aim for our pace to be in the 15 mph range. If you have never gone more than 40 miles, this would not be the best ride to give it a try unless you already have 4 or 5 twenty-plus mile rides this year. Also, because this is a large group ride, where drafting and riding in a straight line is an important skill, make sure you have done 2 or 3 Friday night rides so you will have practiced this skill and are comfortable riding in a large group.

PLEASE RSVP ASAP - NOW! We need to make reservations for lunch! In your RSVP, please let us know if you are doing the Half or Full Century so we can plan accordingly. We will be asking anyone who is driving back to follow the ride route home so if there are any machine (bike) or muscular (people) mechanicals, we can repair or pick up as necessary.

The weather is supposed to be pretty good on Sunday, so come out and join us for a scenic ride and a great lunch!

Friday, June 5, 2009

Trail Maintenance

Just a quick reminder that we are having a trail building day at Jungle Habitat - meet us at 8:45 a.m. at the gates. We'll bring the tools, you bring your gloves and water! And remember, the trail build is a Pay Dirt eligible event - get your hours in early!

We don't have a formal ride planned, but feel free to bring your bike along for a post trail build ride!

Wednesday Ride Reminders

Just a quick reminder about our Wednesday rides - the Wednesday Ladies road ride, meeting at the Village Inn parking lot by Clinton Road, at 6 p.m., and the mountain bike ride meeting on Meridan Road (off Green Pond Road) in Rockaway, at 5:30 p.m. to ride Wildcat Ridge. The weather may not cooperate with us, but if we do get a break, let's make the most of it and get out there and ride!

Friday, May 29, 2009

Wildcat Ridge Ride for Wednesday, June 3

King of the Mountain, Part Deux

Our first King of the Mountain ride was great, and now it's time for the second installment. Join us on Sunday, May 31. The ride and format are the same as the first event. Please be ready to leave Town Cycle at 9 a.m. (and please be considerate of the church attendees when you park!). The ride will be about 3 hours long and cover approximately 40 miles. From the shop, we will go up Warwick Turnpike (Peak 1), down into Warwick, up Route 94, over Mount Peter (Peak 2), into Greenwood Lake, and up Sterling Forest(Peak 3). From there, we will go past IBM to Sloatsburg Road, to Margaret King, Greenwood Lake Turnpike, and back to the shop.

Like last time, at the top of each climb, we'll award points ( and maybe some prizes!) for the first 3 riders in each category. At years' end, we'll award a polka dot jersey (and the right to do some big bragging!) to the top winner in each category! There are 3 categories - Women, Men's Club Riders/Cat 3/Age 14 and under, and Cat. 1/Cat. 2/Age 15-18. Town Cycle has graciously offered to supply us with some prizes for our King of the Mountain events, so come on out try to be a King of the Mountain - or Queen of the Climb!

Friday and Saturday rides

OK, we're a little behind here, but better late than never, right?

Friday, May 29 - Regular Clinton Road ride, meeting at 6 p.m. at the parking lot across from Village Square Inn. There is a possibility of bad weather - we'll ride in light rain, but heavy rain/thunder/lightning cancels.

Saturday, May 30 - Road ride. We were thinking about the W. Milford to Denville road ride and back. Begin at Town Cycle at 10:00, ride down though lower WM into Kinnelon, to Denville...quick stop in Denville, and return back to WM up Otterhole and into town. For those looking for a shorter ride we can meet a crew in the Kinnelon High School parking lot on the way out and drop off on the way back. This will be a 2-3 hour ride at a medium pace. Any takers?

Sunday - we're still working on it - stay tuned and check back in!

Saturday - Meet at Town Cycle at 9:30 a.m. for a moderately paced road ride of approximately 20-25 miles.

Club ride to New Paltz, NY

On June 14th, join us for The New Paltz 50/100 Miles of Fun! The ride Leaves Town Cycle parking Lot at 9:00 a.m. sharp! There will be two ride distances. The first distance is a 40-50 mile ride to New Paltz, followed by lunch at the Gilded Otter Brew Pub in Town. To participate in this leg of the journey, you have to coordinate a ride back with fellow club members or a significant other whom you may need to treat to lunch and a shopping spree on the way home. Feel free to communicate through the website/blog if you need to coordinate a ride back or if you may have extra seats in your own mini-van or bus.

The second ride distance and trip will be a New Paltz out and back which will be 90-100 miles for all interested. We will do our best to make it a true century even if it means an extra lap around Pine Cliff Lake on the way home. For this ride we will ride to New Paltz, get a quick burrito or snack, and turn the wheels back south again for the trip home.

While both rides do not cover too much vertical climbing, 50 or 100 miles is still 50 or 100 miles, no matter what the pace …as Larry Towner once said to me! With that being said, the pace will be in the 15 MPH range. If you have never gone more than 40 miles…this would not be the best ride to give it a try unless you have have four or five 20 mile+ rides in already this year. Also, because this will be a group ride where drafting and riding in a safe straight line is an important skill, make sure you have done 2 or 3 Friday night rides so you have practiced this skill so everyone can be safe. Friday night rides on Clinton Road are the best place to learn drafting techniques and also a great ride to become comfortable riding in a large group.

Finally, for all of you who are planning on doing the ride…PLEASE RSVP by June 10th to info@teamtowncycle.com. We will be making reservations for lunch, so we need a decent head count. If being picked up in New Paltz, don't forget to include your ride in the RSVP if applicable! Also in your RSVP, make sure to indicate if you are doing the Half or the Full Century so we can plan accordingly. We will be asking the driving caravan to drive back the ride loop so if there are any machine (bike) or muscular (people) mechanicals, we can repair or pick up as necessary.

Any questions, please give us a shout! We've done this ride a few times, and it's great fun - we hope you can join us!

Wednesday Ride Reminders

Just the usual reminder for the Wednesday rides - mountain bike ride at Jungle Habitat at 5:30 p.m., and Ladies Road Ride meeting at Village Square Inn at 6 p.m. The weather is going to be spectacular, so get out there!

Weekend rides

A few weekend ride updates for you - we'll try to dodge the raindrops! Friday night, we'll do our usual Clinton Road ride. On Sat., we'll do an easy to moderate paced road ride around Greenwood Lake. Meet at Town Cycle at 9 a.m. - you can park in the church parking lot.

Sunday is the second Campmor H2H race at Tymor Park in Lagrangeville, NY - good luck to all our racers! For those of us who aren't racing, let's meet at noon at Town Cycle for a road ride. We'll go down Morsetown to Westbrook to Stonetown, and then around Greenwood Lake counterclockwise.

Check out details on our calendar - see you on the road!

Our First King of the Mountain is Crowned!

Chris Donahue dominated the first event in our King of the Mountain series! Although the ride was cut short (by unanimous decision), Chris rode away to victory on Warwick Turnpike and crushed everyone on the Mt. Peter climb - even beating one of our racers by a little more than a minute!

Steve Boshart and Gerald Hawkins battled for second on Warwick Turnpike but Gerald beat Steve by the width of a tire. Refusing to go down without a fight, Boshart came back on the Mount Peter climb to take a commanding second place.

Our only Mother on the ride, Angela Barrett, hung with the boys all day and showed everyone how to bomb down hills at 40 plus MPH - even dodging disaster when a car pulled out on our way down to Rt. 94 and opted to drive at about 10 MPH. With catlike reflexes she passed them as if they were standing still. Go Angela!

The lone team racer, BJ Kisch, had a good showing getting to the top of Warwick Tunpike in the lead. He chased Angela down on the descent, also dodging slow autos. Then Donohue crushed him on the Mount Peter climb. He gave it everything but timed his kick too late to gain any ground on the well-paced and consistent Donohue.

Thanks to everyone who came out. Our series totals look like this after the first event -

Women's

1. Angela Barrett 6 points

Men's Club Riders/Cat. 3/age 14 and under riders

1. Chris Donohue 6 points plus 2 premiums
2. Gerard Hawkins 3 points
3. Steve Boshart 3 points

Cat. 1 and 2/ age 15-18 riders

1. BJ Kisch 6 points

We'll make an announcement about our next competition soon - so stay tuned!

Wednesday Ride Reminders

Now that it has finally stopped raining, we expect to see more of you out at our rides! Wednesday we'll be on our mountain bikes at the Jungle at 5:30 - and bring your bug spray! All levels of riders are welcome! We're also having our regular womens' road ride on Clinton Road, leaving at 6:00 p.m. Check out the calendar for details, and come out and ride, ride, ride!

Weekend Rides - Come be a King of the Mountain!

Hopefully no one is getting moldy with all the rain we've been having - sheesh! Here's an update for our weekend rides.

Friday night - our usual Clinton Road ride. See the calendar for details.

Saturday - several of our Junior members will be participating at the Kids/Middle School/High School Race at Kittatinny State Park in Andover, New Jersey. It is the second in the series (our April race was the first), so bring your kids and come out for a good race! Brian and Team Bulldog always put on a good event, so check out the details at www.teambulldog.com and cheer our juniors on! Our Team Town Cycle ride will start from the main Kittatinny parking lot (not the one at the airfield) at 11:00 a.m. The ride will be about two hours long. For those that don't know this park, it's really great. It has a lot of smooth flowing single track and double track and is pretty fast. Really fun stuff and a good change from the rocks and root of the West Milford Area.

Sunday will be our first Team Town Cycle King of the Mountain Ride! We know, we know - maybe some of you wouldn't consider this a fun ride. We promise, it will be! The more you climb, the better you'll get at it! In between peaks, we'll gather the group back together and proceed at a group pace until the next climb.

We like to call this one the Three Peaks Ride. Please be ready to leave Town Cycle at 8 a.m.

At the top of each climb, we'll award points ( and maybe some prizes!) for the first 3 riders in each category. At years' end, we'll award a polka dot jersey (and the right to do some big bragging!) to the top winner in each category! We're still solidifying our categories - there will be 3 or 4, for everyone from Cat 1 racers and Juniors to Clydesdales and weekend warriors. Town Cycle has graciously offered to supply us with some prizes for our King of the Mountain events, so come on out and see if you've got the right stuff to be a King of the Mountain - or Queen of the Climb!

And most important of all - remember to wish all of the mothers in your life a Happy Mother's Day on Sunday!

Wednesday Mountain Bike Ride - Ringwood

Howdy y'all! Due to the fact that it has been days since we've seen the sun, we're going to change the location of our Wednesday ride to Ringwood State Park. If it's too soggy to ride the trails, at least we have the fire roads to ride! Let's meet at the snowmobile parking lot, and we'll be ready to roll by 5:30 p.m. Here's hoping that it dries out a bit!

Weekend rides

Well, the weather isn't all that promising for the weekend, but we'll see what we can do to get out and ride - a little rain never hurt anyone, right?

Friday - barring thunder and lightening, we'll do our usual Friday night road ride on Clinton Road. Check the calendar for details.

Saturday - provided it isn't raining, or didn't rain too hard on Friday night, we will try to pre-ride the race course at Waywayanda State Park in preparation for Sunday's first Campmor H2H race of the season. Meet at the boat launch parking lot by 9 a.m. If it's too wet, we won't ride - the course encompasses many new trails, and the surfaces will be too fragile. Also, don't forget that we will also be working w/JORBA at Jungle Habitat doing more trail building. We'll meet in the parking lot at 8:45 a.m., ready to roll by 9 a.m.

Sunday - Tom Gallagher will lead an epic "Clydesdale" mountain bike ride from his home for all of our non-racing members. Be ready to ride at 10:00 a.m. Tom's address is 30 Gould Road, Newfoundland (Gould runs between Macopin and Union Valley Roads). Bring a little cash with you in case you happen to run across any "refreshment" stands along the way! If you need more info, you can call Tom at (973)255-9921.

Best of luck to all of our Team Town Cycle racers who will be riding in the first Campmor H2H race at Waywayanda on Sunday - go show 'em how it's done!

Wednesday Ride Reminders

Just a quick reminder about our Wednesday rides. Today's mountain bike ride is going to be at Waywayanda, with 2 meeting times. First group will leave at 5 p.m., doing a pre-ride of Sunday's Campmor H2H Race #1 "Spring Cleaning" course. We'll pick up a second group for a second lap at 5:45 p.m. All groups to meet at the historic furnace, where the races usually start.

Our first Ladies ride of the year is also today, leaving at 6 p.m. from the Village Square Inn parking lot on Rt. 23 in Newfoundland. We'll ride out Clinton Road and back. Any rain cancels our ride.

Hope to see you out there!

Juniors in the Jungle Rocked!

Wow, what a day! Thanks to all of you who came out and raced and cheered and supported us at our first annual Juniors in the Jungle Kids Race at Jungle Habitat on Sat. The weather was perfect, and we had almost 80 racers participate! Everyone of our racers were great sports, from our brave warriors with training wheels to our gravity friends and our soon-to-be experts.

Race results are posted on the sidebar on the left, for those who like to keep track! We'll have pictures up shortly.

There were many people who made this day possible. We'd definitely like to thank the West Milford Ambulance Squad for volunteering their time, and Ringwood State Park for allowing us to hold our event at this great site. We'd also like to thank some of our sponsors - in particular Town Cycle, Trek, and ResQtags for donating prizes. Also thanks to all of our club sponsors, including FX Solutions, ACD Security, Komodo Training, Paintland, Jim Weinbrect Construction, The Hidden Valley Club, and Precision Sprinklers. Special thanks to James Wilbur who acted as our USA Cycling official, and of course, all the members of Team Town Cycle who came out and volunteered their time and talents to make this a success!

Please don't forget the second race in the series, which is on May 9th, at Kittatinny State Park in Andover. For more information, see http://www.teambulldog.com/ . Also for those riders 10+, join us on September 27, 2009 for Race #7 in the Campmor H2H series, the Rumble in the Jungle. Go to http://www.teamtowncycle.com/ and click on the "Races" tab for more info.

We hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did, thanks again for coming out, and we hope we'll see you all again next year!

Juniors in the Jungle Reminder and Weekend Rides

It's going to be a beautiful weekend, so don't forget to join us for our 1st annual Juniors in the Jungle Kids Race at Jungle Habitat on Sat., April 25th. Links to the flyers with all the information are on the side bar. We have a race for all kids from kindergarten through high school, so grab your favorite kids and come join us!

Of course, we can't let the kids have all the fun, so here is our club ride schedule for the weekend.

Saturday…following the First Annual Juniors in the Jungle Race, there will be a Team Town Cycle Club road ride from Town Cycle parking lot leaving at 3:30. The ride will loop around Greenwood Lake counterclockwise and head up Greenwood lake Turnpike. We will continue left down Clinton Road and come back into town on Union Valley Road.

Sunday-Ride will be a Team Town Cycle Club Mtb. Ride from the Kahl’s house immediately following the trail clean-up. Trail clean-up begins at 9:00. We hope to be riding by 1:00 but the start time will depend on how many people are able to attend the clean-up and if we get the trails ready. The sooner we get the trails cleaned up, the sooner we can start Monday night rides! Contact Heather Kahl at heatherk@acdsecurity.com to RSVP and for directions if you are unsure.

Hope to see you out there!

Girls, Girls, Girls!

Great news! We're ready to start our Wednesday night Ladies rides again. Our first ride will be on April 29, 2009. We will meet at the same place as we do for our Friday night rides, the parking lot across the street from the Village Square Inn on Route 23, Newfoundland. Let's be ready to ride by 6 p.m. We'll ride Clinton Road out and back, which is about 20 miles round trip. Heavy rain cancels our ride. Wednesday Reminders!

Two reminders for Wednesday, April 22. At 5:30, we will have our regular mountain bike ride at Jungle Habitat, leaving at 5:30. For anyone who has a racer who will be riding at Saturday's Juniors in the Jungle race, this is a good time to come check out your lap.

Easter weekend rides

Our schedule is going to be a little lighter this weekend - we know many of you will be spending time with family and friends, celebrating all the spring holidays! Here's our schedule for rides for Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday, April 11 join us at Ringwood State Park, Parking Lot C at 12 p.m. for a mountain bike ride. If the trails are too wet, our ride will consist of the fire road climbs in the park. This is a good opportunity for different ride levels to separate on the climb and then group back with the main crew. Ride time will be 1.5 - 2 hours.

Sunday, April 12, we will gather for a 9 a.m. road ride. Meet at the Town Cycle parking lot. Please remember to be considerate of the churchgoers - it's Easter Sunday, so there will be more people than usual there. Our ride will be around Greenwood Lake in the clockwise direction (for a change of pace!) and some climbing. Ride time will be approximately 2 hours.

We hope to see you there, and that you enjoy your holiday weekend - whatever holiday you celebrate!

More Info about Juniors in the Jungle Kids Race

We've been getting lots of questions about our kids race, which is great! We're thrilled so many people are interested. The question we get asked the most is - what is the course? Can I get a map so I can pre-ride it with my kids? The answer is - yes! Soon! The course was finalized over the weekend, we are working on a map, and in the next day or so, it will be available over on the side bar by the flyers for the race. In addition, we're hoping that next Sunday, April 19, will be a "pre-ride" day for all who are interested. We are still hashing out the details on that, so check back in a few days for the scoop!

And keep those entries coming!

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Ladies Night Out

We invite all of our women cyclists to a Ladies Night Out on April 22, 2009 at the Pinecliff Lake Clubhouse at 1577 Union Valley Road, West Milford starting at 7 p.m. Trek WSD (Women Specific Design) rep Chris Garrison will be on hand to discuss proper bike fit and what separates women’s fit versus men’s. There will also be an easy demonstration on how to change a flat tire. We'll have wine and cheese, so grab a friend and join us for a night off and a night out!

RSVP's are appreciated but not required - and of course, if you have any questions, please email us. Hope to see you there!

It's Alive!

Woohoo - the new website is up! Some formatting is being tweaked, and we still have to add a few items, but now there is one easy place to find all of our information. Make sure you change any of your bookmarks to read http://www.teamtowncycle.com/ - not the blogspot address. We will continue to use the blog as we are now - for ride info, announcements, etc. - you'll just be able to get to it from the main page.

A big kudos goes out to our blog designer, Kathleen Sinnott at http://www.sinnottsolutions.com/ - she's the best!

Keep checking back for more good stuff!

Road Ride, Sunday, April 5th

Check out our calendar on the sidebar for more info on our road ride set for Sunday, April 5th, 9 a.m, meeting at Town Cycle. This is a longer road ride…around Greenwood Lake on the East Shore Drive. There will be two ride lengths on this trip. After we get into Greenwood Lake, we will climb over Sterling Forest and down into the Sloatsburg area. The longer group ride will continue for one to two hours of more fun up into Harriman State Park where there will be some climbing. The shorter ride will come back into West Milford through Sloatsburg, and up Margaret King Blvd.

The longer ride will be 3-4 hours…the shorter ride will be 2-3 hours. Bring plenty of water, food, and a few dollars of “anti-bonk” prevention, so you can buy a coke or Gatorade before it’s too late. The longer ride will be geared to our long distance riders and race team members, the shorter ride will be an intermediate pace. The ride will stay together at the same pace until the break-off point as we come down Sterling Forest.

Email us if you have any questions - hope to see you all there!

Trail Build and Ride, Sat., April 4th

Just a reminder that we are having our Trail Build date at Jungle Habitat on Sat., April 4th, meeting at 8:45 a.m. in the parking lot. You bring the work gloves, we'll bring the tools. We'll follow our trail work with a ride, starting at 12:30. If you've never built a trail and ridden it, come see what it is all about. You would be surprised at how much planning and man-power goes into one mile of single track trail.

Of course, if you can't join us for the trail build, you're still more than welcome to come for the ride - although we can't promise we won't abuse you a bit!

Friday night road rides are back!

You asked for them - we have them! The Friday night Clinton Road ride is back!

Meet in the Village Square Inn/Pizza parking lot, on Rt. 23 North, across from the restaurant. Ride out and back…mixed groups up Clinton Road to the end and back. This is an easy paced road ride…about a 20 miles round trip. Good first timer ride as you can turn around earlier if you want and there will be multiple groups and paces. A great ride to learn how to ride in a small group, or learn how “draft”. As the ride gains experience and the weeks go by we may break into multiple levels of “pace line” for the return trip. If you don’t know what that is…no worries…that’s one of the reasons to come out…you will get a chance to learn and have fun! This is also a great ride for a new junior rider! We encourage all to stop for a beverage or slice at the Village Square Inn after the ride.

The calendar on our sidebar has all the info for our ride dates! We're constantly adding and updating, so check back often.

General ride information

Now that we are starting to stack our Team Town Cycle calendar with rides, rides and more rides, this would probably be a good time to go over some basic information for rides, weather conditions, meeting times, etc.

Our Weather Policy - As a general rule, if it's raining hard enough that you wouldn't want to cut the lawn, we more than likely will not be riding in it either. If there is severe weather predicted (lightning, hail, snow, etc.), we definitely won't be riding. On road rides, if it is a scheduled ride specifically for new riders or juniors who are still learning to handle a bike, we'll cancel - wet roads are no place to learn! For mountain bike rides, our policy is to remain OFF fragile mountain bike trails when there is rain or deep mud, and stick to fire roads and carriage trails.

That being said, you never know when it comes to northern New Jersey weather. It could be raining down in the 287 valley, snowing in West Milford, and sunny in between. What we are saying is ... be flexible - and be prepared! You might be surprised at the weather we ride in! With proper clothing and common sense, a little water never stopped a ride. If the weather looks "iffy" or unpredictable, come with a rain cape and be ready to get wet. It could be sunny when a ride begins, and pouring at the halfway point.

We will do our best not to make any last minute changes, but keep your eyes open and check the Team Town Cycle website for last minute time or ride schedule changes. If the weather looks bad in the A.M. and better in the P.M., we may "swap" a morning ride for an afternoon ride. Either way, we are all just looking for a way to get out there and ride, have fun, and keep the rubber side down!

Our Meet/Leave Policy - Our intent is to leave promptly at the designated ride time. We understand people plan other events around ride times, so it is important we do our best to keep on schedule. However, if you are coming and are running late, give a quick call. If possible, we will try to have someone hang back for you.

Parking Courtesy - Common sense prevails here, but worth a reminder. Some of our rides meet at the parking lots of local businesses. They are providing this space as a courtesy and convenience to us, and it is important that we don't abuse it. When we meet at Town Cycle, please be aware of activities at both the shop and at the church, and park accordingly. For rides meeting at The Village Square Inn - again, let's not use the spaces right next to the front door. Also, perhaps we could express our appreciation for the use of their lots through the purchase of a post ride Clif bar/adult beverage/slice of pizza? Wherever we park, let's remember to show some manners!

We'll be posting more rides later today, so check back in with us to see if you can join us as we hit the roads and the trails!
